on the subtitle it was translated as "give me a break"....i just wonder... Puppy Dog Eyes

It would be easier if you had a sound clip. Or at least the time when that particular line was said.

"Taku" sounds right. It's a slang version of mattaku. Literally, "get real". Kimitachi translators could have saved themselves two syllables.

So if I go into a sushi bar, and I want the itamai to choose my menu, what's the right phrase?

I know that omakase kudasai means "trust me", but how do I show itamai that I am giving him my trust? Nandemo oishii?

Thanks!

If you say "Nandemo oishii" he'll think you just bought yourself a Rosetta Stone course. Like this guy in their commercial who's supposed to order in French but sounds like he's saying "I'd like the chicken she laughs." So you can say "Kyo wa naniga ii desu ka?" and after he tells you what's ii, you can tell him "Omakase ni shite kudasai."

if he offers you to let him choose for you, you cuold also simply reply:

"yoroshiku onegaishimasu" (and bow your head a little)

or

"jaa, omakase de" (little casual, and smile)

or

"ah, kitai shiteorimasu" (polite, in this case means: "Im looking forward to what you gonna give me", and bow your head a little)

otherwise I would go with Shari`s suggestion, though after he tells you what he thinks is good, you could also say "jaa, sensei ni makashimasu" (by calling him sensei you point out that he knows the stuff a lot better than you do and pay him respect, when you say it you could point gesture at him by using your whole hand, dont point with just your indexfinger) Good

Thanks, your suggestions are right on. Smile

Right on. It's actually a radio commercial. You hear Joe-Six-Pack inflicting his Rosetta Stone French on a waiter at a French restaurant. He's supposed to say "Je voudrai le poulet avec du riz" but instead he says "Jay voodray le poolay et l'riz." I bet "rit" is just what the waiter did.

(BTW: Votre francais est excellent, Monsieur Ichiban.)

Merci tellement. It's probably the disconnect between "elle" and "et le" that makes the joke. Proper pronunciation is very important in French, otherwise meanings can be lost, as you have seen.

French and Japanese are my favorite languages. How can you go wrong? w00t!
