from what i read here, formal japanese writing is from top to bottom, right to left.
So, if i want to write ���E�̒��S�ŁA���������� into 2 vertical lines, will this be correct?

The kana is called okurigana. Hopefully that will help you find your answer.

Doh...you're right niko. Okurigana is the kana after a kanji, like the �� in ����.

I quickly searched the topic, and it seems possible using something called Ruby (not sure if it's a font). When I get more free time, I'll see what this does.

Yeah, there's a button in Microsoft Word (like the [I] button for italics or the [B] button for bold) called ���r that will put furigana above the selected kanji.
I don't know if this option exists in the English version as I only have the Japanese version of Word.

And there is already a typing in Japanese thread, so I'm merging.

i'm in MS Word (US ver) now and typing in japanese, but i cannot see the button you are talking about (it should be in the formatting toolbar). not that that means that function is not there, but it may be in some patch somewhere...

Okay. I just discovered how to do it in the English MS Word (2003, shouldn't matter I think). You would first type out the word in kanji. Then highlight the word, and choose Format->Asian Layout->Phonetic Guide and enter the kana in the Ruby Text section.

Can anyone show me how to write a typical Japanese letter with signature?
