yeap sure
r u using win xp
all u need is ur install disc
go to control panel >>> language & reginal options >>> add other language
at the languages tab
check the install files for east asian languages
and click ok

make sure your control panel is in the category view
if it's in classic view then click on regional & language setting n u'll be directed to the languages tab

How do I type kanji on XP - most of artists's names are written in kanji and not katakana/hiragana. I installed multi-language support but I did not see any option for kanji or did I just overlook something...

when you type in the hiragana, there should be a dashed underline under the characters you've typed. once done with the hiragana, you then push the space bar, then that opens a whole options of kanji's that you can then match whatever you just typed in.

Also, for those who have PDA's with Pocket PC, here's a useful link on how to download for iPAQ's (the procedure for other ARM processors is similar):

When you follow the procedure, you will also be able to type Japanese in Pocket Word, if you set the font to either "CEFONT" or "MS Gothic" (latter looks neater). Like this:

The squared field is where you stroke the symbol. Kanji is obviously difficult, there are alternatives in case the PDA can't tell right away what you mean.

Here I am writing the word "omoshiroi" but often my "i" comes out like "ri".

you don't really need a JPN keyboard. all you need is to d/l the JPN IME from the microsoft home site (you can use the search function). After d/l'ing (about 50 something K), install and you can type in JPN!

that is true with the korean keyboard/OS. as far as the JPN keyboard working with a JPN OS, that could be true as well. I hope you get what you are looking for.

I've never looked around on the Windows PC front... On the Apple Macintosh front, I see Japanese keyboards auctioned on eBay on a regular basis. I currently have Japanese keyboards on one of my Macintosh Powerbooks, and also on my Bandai Pippin @WORLD unit. So you may want to look there for PC keyboards.

I could see someone wanting a Japanese keyboard... Not being a Japanese reader myself, I would imagine that the Japanese characters on the keys would help some people.

To dimwits like me, the keys are a little bit different too.
The alpha keys are all the same but the symbol keys positioning differ a little bit. I find myself at momentary pauses looking for the apostrophy key when typing on my friends laptop and my girlfriend's laptop.

For Window XP user.

Actually, a japanese keyboard really wouldn't be all that helpful at all. There isn't enough keys on a stand keyboard in order to handle all the japanese hiragana alphabet, let along that with the katakana and the kanjis. Typing in romaji is most definitiely the way to go. As for handling kanji, windows is smart enough to be able to give you an accurate list of what kanjis you might want when you type it in romaji. Mostly likely, it'll even automatically put them in kanji for you. Stick with IME.

Also, you can use a japanese layout keyboard in the US version of windows, you just need to specify that you're using one in the control panels.

haven't bought from them, but they appeared in google's top recommended.
having the same problem, i thoroughly dislike using romanji as it takes a lot of time and is a bit confusing, and it takes too long to make it the way i like it before i type. and using the kana input method is a bit awkward since don't quite see all the punctuation marks.
going to look into getting one of those keyboards though.
