Well, I'll put my 2 cents in. When you first decide to learn japanese you think, "well I'll bypass the writing system and just learn to speak." Sounds logical since Japanese has the second most difficult writing system in the world, (and some argue the first)
But, that's just not possible. Writing is so tied in with a language and spoken japanese is soo very basterized that unless you understand the root of speech you will never get anywhere.
There are several versions of pimsleur out there, the first versions were like polite 1950's old lady japanese, the newer edition (1998) is much better but still way to polite. If you learn polite forms exclusively (kaigo) you won't have any idea what people are saying (in Japan) because no one talks like that.
That doesn't mean Pimsluer is useless. But you should easily learn everything Pimsleur 1 teaches in a few weeks or months of real japanese study. Once you understand the words learning how to put your new words into sentences is a great help. _________________ ͉̂ӂӂĂB

oooh have fun. mandarin is one of those langugages you should take in a classroom enviorment. i took it for a year and my professor was BRUTAL. it's hard because there are 4 tones per syllable and if you mess the tone up, you mess the word up. have fun.

Thanks. I d/l all of them and this is a nice supplement to my 2 foot high stack of Japanese learning books; books on verbs, adjectives, Kanji dicitonary, particles etc....
I listened to the first 30 minutes and I like the technique. At least in this method they speak it slow enough so you can actually understand the sounds unlike other methods I bought were they speak like a rocket firing without breaking it down at all.
