PostPosted: Tue Aug 26, 2003 2:11 am    Post subject: South Korea Reply with quote Back to top

Hello!

I am learning about South Korea, not North Korea, and I have a few questions about telling the two apart.

1. First off, I reside in the United States, and in California, there is a Korean majority, there are a lot of Korean people, businesses, etc. Are the majority of the people here in California from South Korea, or North Korea? On point of fact, does the North Korean government even let North Koreans reside anywhere else except for North Korea?

2. On some local channels, they are a lot of Korean programming, such as news programs, dramas, and other entertainment. Is this programming South Korean, or North Korean? Does the United States air any North Korean Programming?

3. I know that in South Korea, when you ask somebody what the name of their country is, they won't say "South Korea". How do you say South Korea in Korean? I've heard Hankook, but I heard that that means Korea. I've also heard Tehan min-guk or something, but I heard that that is the official name, and that hardly anybody uses that. What do the majority of the people of South Korea call South Korea in Korean?

Thank you!

Please reply urgently!

I don't live in California so I'm guessing. From observation, most of them should be South Koreans. I dunno if North Korea likes the idea of Glasnost or not, but as far as i know there are not as many North Koreans as South Koreans residing overseas.

2. On some local channels, they are a lot of Korean programming, such as news programs, dramas, and other entertainment. Is this programming South Korean, or North Korean? Does the United States air any North Korean Programming?

Again, they're most likely South Korean channels.

3. I know that in South Korea, when you ask somebody what the name of their country is, they won't say "South Korea". How do you say South Korea in Korean? When I ask, they just answered that they're from Korea. They didn't specify which, so I'm guessing be it North or South, it doesn't really matter to them. And most of the time, we get to meet South Koreans more than North Koreans unless we're in Han-guk, so I assume they're from South Korea.

Sorry, it doesn't help much.

I live here in the metropolitan DC area and there is a big population of koreans here as well. As a matter of fact, there are 5 koreans here in my office. Most, like 95-97% of the people of korean descent are from S.Korea. It's easier for them to emigrate. The people of N. Korea are propogandicised into thinking that the north is a wonderful country, which is definitly not the case.

The reason why there aren't n. koreans here is that if they try to leave the country, they will be shot. Even as simple as crossing the borders to Russia or china to look for food (or whatever the reason. But food most likely b/c they're in the midst of the worst famine in their history), they will be gunned down when they cross the border.

It's such a shame to hear all this, but it is the truth. And PLEEASE, don't get me started on the relationship between N. Korea and Japan. I can write a thesis on that.

Ok, some facts about North Korea.... they are a communist country but unlike China, they DO NOT let anyone in to the country nor do they let anyone out.

99.9 % of koreans you meet are South Koreans
.1 % of koreans you meet will be North Koreans

North Korea is a strictly military country, they do not have time for drama shows, fashion shows etc, because half the people there are dying of starvation.

If you meet an North Korean, you should congratulate them for escaping from their country... (if you leave North korea, they will Shoot you without hesitation)

I am myself a south korean but I never say I'm from the south because it's pretty much a given.

check this out:

http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/opinion/200308/kt2003083117413311300.htm

Quote:
A leading cable TV home shopping mall established the highest-ever sales record for a single item at just 80 minutes since the concept debuted in Korea eight years ago.

Quote:
The sale item has made many Koreans sad or enraged, while some might have been envious of those who were able to purchase the limited product, showing the stark reality of the nation today.

The hot item on sale: an opportunity to leave the Republic of Korea. The price: 28 million won ($24,000).

Quote:
Shocking was the fact that of those who were ``fortunate’’ enough to buy the product on a first-come-first-served basis, people in their 30s accounted for 51 percent and they were mostly engineers.

uhh...... lol

from like ie. the movie 'Go' there seemed to be a good number of north koreans, cause they were all north korean @ his first school right? So how come there are so many there, doesn't really make sense to say that it's japan and it's closer .. were these north koreans who might have emmigrated during the korean war or something?

In the movie GO, the North Koreans were all the people who escaped before they closed off the country during the korean war.
I have never actually met a North Korean who escaped from North Korea after they closed everything off.

everytime i listen to news on N Korea's nuclear programme, it really sets me off... i mean half the population is dying of starvation and the bloody govt is only interested in squandering all the money on nuclear stuff... sheesh!!! Angry just what is this world coming to??!!!

then there are the reports on ppl in the South meeting their relatives living in the North for the first time in like 50 years (since Korean War i think)... that's like so sad... esp when you see an elderly mother/father meeting their children for the 1st time in that span of time... i really feel for them... Cry and they'll probably nvr, ever get to see one another again..... Cry
i just can't comprehend why it must be so hard for them to meet... Sad Sad
it's just not right...... Shake Head

Not only for those people, but those japanese who where kidnapped way back when. They were kidnapped for the purpose of training N.Korean spies the japanese language, the customs, tendencies, and habits of the japanese.

http://www.mofa.go.jp/region/asia-paci/n_korea/abduct.html

How do you think Kim hyun hee got her training? She was a N. korean spy that terrorist bombed a Korean Air (KAL) passenger jet in 1987, killing 115 people.
