Getting us back on topic, I remember years ago when my cousin worked Nissei Week, he met Kristi Yamaguchi. Said she was the most boring person he'd ever met.

Not all Nisei Week Queens are boring, and some of them are down right attractive. I knew Lisa Yamamoto, the NW Queen from the '70s, and she was sharp, bright and quite attractive. We worked together for a few years and my GF at the time was pretty jealous. (BTW, her official photo does not do her justice! She's much prettier in person).

I don't think Kristi was a Nisei Queen, but I did meet Tamlyn Tomita (Nisei Queen 1984) when she was one of the parade marshalls in 1991 (?)... She was/is a doll.

It's been a while since I've gone to Nisei Week. When my parents were still living and active in the community, we'd go virtually every year - if nothing else, just to see the events - but more often to help with some of the activities. Nowadays, I rarely get there anymore. I know, shame on me!
Sorry I can't attend but I'm curious..Who gets to vote on the Nisei Queen? They showed the candidates' photos. Are you going to attend bmwracer? What is your favorite event?

You had me convinced...
Did you go last year?
I missed out: my chump of a brother flaked out in the last minute... His school bud, Mike Komai (editor of the Rafu Shimpo) was the grand marshall, too. Drag.

Dude, I'd be there in a heartbeat.
@Enna: I don't think the public has a vote. At least I believe that's the way it works for the Cherry Blossom Festival Pageant in SF Japantown.

Gomen. I had to visit the benjo to wipe the drool offa my face...
I've no idea who votes on the Nisei Week Queen, but it's probably a select group, and not the general public.
I always try to attend every year, but it's tough trying to find someone else who wants to go along... I have no friends.
Favorite? Hmm. I've been loving the taiko demonstrations the last couple of years... They used to have a carnival with a lotta cute college gals, but that event hasn't been around lately...
