After the series aired in 1997, there were three succeeding specials over the next couple of years. None of them, to my knowledge, have been fansubbed, which is a shame since I've seen the specials (thanks, Geezer!) and enjoyed them greatly, even with my limited Japanese. Btw, the first special shows how Aoshima is able to get back to his old job after being demoted at the end of the series.
The first theatrical OD film opened in 1999--it was the highest grossing live-action domestic film in Japan that year. The second OD film appeared in 2003--at the time it was the highest grossing live-action domestic film in Japanese cinematic history. Both movies had the entire OD cast from the TV series, as well as the writer, producer, and director.
The third film of the OD franchise--The Negotiator--focuses on Yusuke Santamaria's character, Masayoshi Mashita. A couple of minor characters from the original OD series make cameo appearances, including Miki Mizuno, but the principal characters, aside from Santamaria's, are different from the original series.
The fourth film--The Suspect--focuses on Yanagiba's character, Superintendent Muroi. Again, some minor characters make cameo appearances (there is a brief hilarious scene with the three chiefs) as well as a cameo from Maya Miki's character from the second movie. However, like the third movie, all of the principal characters, aside from Yanagiba's, are different from the original series.
I see now! Thanks for the recaps. I'm surprised the specials weren't subbed, considering how popular the series and the first two movies were! As for the last two movies, I guess only fans of those particular characters would really appreciate it. I, perosnally, get a little peeved when they decide to change the actors/actresses... but keeps the characters the same. It ruins the whole dynamic. _________________

I wished they had spent more time developing the case with the Suicide Site/Teddy-in-Tummy. It was really gripping and the killer (wasn't she in Survive Style 5+) was really freaky. That case seemed far more important to solve than the guy's kidnapping.
If you consider who the victims of the two crimes are, it becomes understandable why the police--and hence the storyline--would focus on one more than the other. But I agree with you--that woman is really creepy, almost Hannibal Lecter-ish in a couple of scenes.
Btw, the late Chosuke Ikariya won the Japan Academy award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in this movie.

I just finished the second movie. I definitely liked this one better. Not only was the story/crime better, but you really got to see more emotions and weaknesses in this one.
Maya Miki was grand! I always enjoy her performances. Btw, is it just me, or did Santamaria age quite a bit? _________________

*ahem* The second movie was made 7 years after the original series if I recall...at his young age, of COURSE he looks older!
I'm aware of that, but he aged A LOT. I mean, everyone got older along with him, right? But he was noticeably changed. I've seen him in Wedding Planner, which was made before the movie, and he was very aged looking in that as well... compared to Odoru. He must be a really heavy smoker. (i'm basing that on the numerous wrinkles and terrible teeth). He's still grand tho.

She also gave a really good performance in a romantic comedy dorama, Renai Kekkon no Hosoku playing an earnest, engaging, very sympathetic character. This series came out only a year after the first OD movie: to see her excel at playing two completely different roles is a testament to her acting ability. Heck, I didn't even recognize her at first in the OD movie.
She only had a guest role in Yasashii Jikan(in ep 9 dramawiki says), if you want to see a really good performance from her, I would recommend "Hanging Garden," directed by Toshiaki Toyoda.

Hehe! I love these funny moments. And the whole sequence with Sumire-san (Fukatsu Eri) locking herself up in a cell and the 3 high ranking officers trying to get her come out. And the conversation with the kid who vandalized the coin machine in the first episode. And Aoshima trying to requisition a police car for the first time. Hahaha. OK I will stop now. ^^
Haven't seen anything like these moments in other series... although Ohsama no Restauran was also very funny.
My absolute favorite is the whole scene with that creepy guy who tries to get girls to hang out with him by paying money, great watching Oda Yuji getting all fired up:
Oda: "Don't mock me!"
Girls: "He's cute."
Oda: "...cute?"
I watch the opening segments of different episodes when I need a quick laugh, never get tired of them.

In the second episode, Aoshima said that he knows a good lawyer named Takaoka while interviewing the woman who cut off her ex-boyfriend's hair. Takaoka Junpei was the lawyer Oda Yuji played in Seigi wa katsu [���`�͕K����].
I've just noticed this. This is probably the 4th time I've watched this episode.

Just watched Odoru Daisousasen SP2, the one with Uchida Yuki in the lead role. I found it a little bit slow and dull in the beginning but by the end I enjoyed it quite a lot. Uchida Yuki looked very beautiful and glamorous in some shots. Wish that they had continued and made more stories with her character.
May try to find and download the other 2 movies now after enjoying that one.

Third "Odoru Daisousasen" movie starts filming in 2009

"Odoru Daisousasen" is returning with another movie, looking to continue its reputation as one of the most successful drama and film franchises in Japan. The first movie in 1998 grossed 10.1 billion yen, while the 2003 follow-up took in close to 17.4 billion yen. The two films are ranked #3 and #1, respectively, in the all-time list of Japan's highest-grossing live-action works.
Katsuyuki Motohiro is directing, once again backed by screenwriter Ryoichi Kimizuka and producer Chihiro Kameyama. Yuji Oda will of course play the lead, joined by returning cast members Toshiro Yanagiba, Eri Fukatsu, Yusuke Santamaria, and Miki Mizuno. Chosuke Ikariya passed away in 2004, but Kameyama indicated a possibility that he may make some kind of appearance in the movie.
According to Kameyama, filming will start in 2009 due to Oda's busy schedule this year. He also plans to have the film reflect the actual passage of time since the last movie, so the story is set several years after the end of "Odoru Daisousasen 2."
