I just finished watching this drama and thought I'd make a thread for it, considering there are a lot of fans here.

My Review: 9/10
With the exceeding number of romantic dramas being produced, I always forget that I actually enjoy cop dramas. I donft know what it is about them. And yes, itfs MORE than just the uniforms. I like the mystery and suspense involved. I like how they show the power of the mind and heart to solve the cases.
Watching Odoru Daisousasen reminded me once more that Ifve been missing this genre. The storylines in this series are solid. Each one is carefully planned and written and so each mystery was interesting to watch. I was fascinated with each case and was rarely disappointed in the handling of it. The cases were varied enough to keep onefs attention, which is hard to do successfully.
What made this show was the cast, of course. Oda did a great job portraying the reckless rookie detective. Yanagiba was perfect as the stressed out elite (Ifm surprised the vein in his forehead didnft burst). Fukatsu was hilarious as the sole female detective in the branch. Her character was like a breath of fresh air and I hope more female characters like her arise in other dramas. Ikariya, one of my favs, was fabulous as the old, soon-to-retire detective. He was hilarious AND powerful and I really enjoyed his performance. Mizuno was grand, as always, and Ifm glad her role didnft fade away into a random story. I liked the fact that she stuck around.
This show had the perfect balance of comedy and drama. When the scene called for seriousness, they delivered effectively. When the stress of the situation needed to be lifted, they successfully incorporated memorable comedic moments. The actors and crew were flawless in providing such seamless transitions. It was satisfying to watch in its realistic, natural quality. This drama stands strong in proving that dramas like this one are no longer being written. Such a shame.
I look forward to the movies!
I've started the first movie:

Since Chosuke Ikariya passed away in 2004, I'd say we probably won't see another movie. A major part of this series was the interaction between his character and Oda.

After the series aired in 1997, there were three succeeding specials over the next couple of years. None of them, to my knowledge, have been fansubbed, which is a shame since I've seen the specials (thanks, Geezer!) and enjoyed them greatly, even with my limited Japanese. Btw, the first special shows how Aoshima is able to get back to his old job after being demoted at the end of the series.
The first theatrical OD film opened in 1999--it was the highest grossing live-action domestic film in Japan that year. The second OD film appeared in 2003--at the time it was the highest grossing live-action domestic film in Japanese cinematic history. Both movies had the entire OD cast from the TV series, as well as the writer, producer, and director.
The third film of the OD franchise--The Negotiator--focuses on Yusuke Santamaria's character, Masayoshi Mashita. A couple of minor characters from the original OD series make cameo appearances, including Miki Mizuno, but the principal characters, aside from Santamaria's, are different from the original series.
The fourth film--The Suspect--focuses on Yanagiba's character, Superintendent Muroi. Again, some minor characters make cameo appearances (there is a brief hilarious scene with the three chiefs) as well as a cameo from Maya Miki's character from the second movie. However, like the third movie, all of the principal characters, aside from Yanagiba's, are different from the original series.
