I have seen this movie, and it is very good. It's about an aging kirare-yaku who struggles to find work in an entertainment industry which no embraces jidaigeki dramas and movies and foists no-talent idols on the viewing public.
Kirare-yaku are stuntmen who specialize in dying in sword fights. Seizo Fukumoto, who plays the protagonist in the movie, is a real-life kirare-yaku who purportedly has died several thousand times on screen.
This is an elegiac film about a profession that once was prolific and vital in Japanese entertainment but now is being squeezed out by the very reasons listed in the article about why Japanese movies suck.

Arata Iura, Eita, Kyoko Hasegawa, Manami Hashimoto to star in movie "Hikari"
Iura Arata, Eita, Hasegawa Kyoko and Hashimoto Manami will be appearing in the new movie "Hikari" based on Miura Shion's same-titled novel which will be directed by Omori Tatsushi. The movie is based on the theme of violence in daily life and describes how Nobuyuki, a junior high school student who lives on Mihamajima, a remote island in Tokyo, commits a crime when he tries to protect his classmate and girlfriend Mika. On the following day, the island is struck by a huge disaster thus leaving a few survivors including Nobuyuki, Mika, their childhood friend Tasuke and a few others. 25 years on, Tasuke appears again in front of Nobuyuki who is already married and reveals that he has a secret about the latter. Iura will play the 39-year-old Nobuyuki while Eita plays the role of Tasuke. Hasegawa will play Mika who tries to bury her past and survive in showbiz and Hashimoto will play Namiko who is Nobuyuki's wife.
During the filming, Iura recounted that he had to come face to face with violence in various forms so it was an emotionally taxing time for him. This is the third time that he is working with Omori and he's always thankful for the latter being able to bring out an unknown side of him each time so he's more than happy to give his all in the director's movies. As for Eita, he regards this collaboration with Iura very stimulating because he has always liked the latter as an actor and learnt new interesting things about acting from him this time. He too has worked with the director thrice to date but finds it a refreshing experience this time to work in this movie.
Hasegawa commented that it was like a journey of self-discovery for her this time and she had thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Hashimoto revealed that this is the first time she had acted in something like this so she hopes that the audience will be looking forward to watching the movie.
Co-stars also include Minami Kaho and Hirata Mitsuru. Filming was done between 20 August and 27 September at Izu Islands and Kawasaki. It will be shown in cinemas from autumn 2017.

Takuya Kimura and Ninomiya Kazunari to star in "Kensatsugawa no Zainin"
Kimura Takuya will be taking on the leading role in the new movie "Kensatsugawa no Zainin" (The sinner on the prosecutor's side) which will be shown in cinemas next year. Joining him in the cast line-up will be Arashi's Ninomiya Kazunari. The movie is based on the 2013 novel by Shizukui Shusuke and will be directed by Harada Masato who offered the roles to the actors in March this year. Filming will begin in July.
The story features Ninomiya as a newbie prosecutor Okino Keiichiro who has a strong sense of justice and is sent to work at the Tokyo Public Prosecutors' Office with an elite prosecutor Mogami Takeshi. When a murder case is assigned to their department, Okino and Mogami develop different views about the case. It is revealed later that the suspect in this case happens to be the same suspect in a murder which had passed its statute of limitations. Mogami is bent on not letting this suspect off the hook again as his inability to put him to justice in the past caused the death of a person who was important to him. This causes Mogami and Okino to clash especially when Mogami tries to overstep his authority as a prosecutor and Okino has reservations about the biased manner in which his senior is conducting the investigation.
Kimura commented that he is excited and honoured to be participating in a Harada production and thinks that it will be fun working with Ninomiya and the rest of the cast. Ninomiya commented that he will have to suppress his excitement and keep a cool head to tackle this role and will depend on Harada's directing and Kimura's leading during the filming.

Eita and Eriko Sato to be leads in new movie "Ringside Story
Eita and Sato Eriko will be joint leads in the new movie "Ringside Story" which will be shown in cinemas from 14 October. The movie directed by Take Masaharu, features Sato as Enoshima Kanako who is living with her boyfriend of 10 years Murakami Hideo (Eita), a struggling actor. When she gets fired from the bento factory she works at, she becomes a staff member in the professional wrestling group WRESTLE-1 and becomes deeply drawn to the sport. On the other hand, Hideo who is literally sponging off Kanako, misunderstands that she is seeing someone else when Kanako gets too engrossed in her new job and he causes a very serious incident as a result of his jealousy.
Co-stars include wrestlers Muto Keiji, Kuroshio Jiro, K-1 world champion Takeru, Arizono Yoshiki, Tanaka Yoji, Ito Shunsuke, Nao, Maeno Tomoya, Tsunogae Kazue, Kondo Yoshimasa and Yo Kimiko.
Ramen Heads is a 2017 Japanese documentary about--you guessed it--ramen. The movie focuses on Tomita Osamu, the reigning king of ramen in Japan (his restaurant in Matsudo, Chiba has won the title of Best Ramen restaurant four years in a row). He specializes in tsukemen ramen, and his dipping sauce is nothing like I've ever seen--it's almost as thick as mud.
As a documentary, it's not close to being as good as Jiro Dreams of Sushi, but if you are a ramen lover (as I am), this movie is well worth watching.

The one and only Mana Ashida turned 16 this week, seems like she's been around longer than that. Anyway, she has new movie coming out this Fall.

When Chihiro (Mana Ashida) was a baby, she suffered from eczema. Her parents searched for cures, but nothing worked. Her father's co-worker then gave him some water from an odd religious group. Chihiro was miraculously cured by the water. Her parents began to follow the strange religion and became fervent followers. Chihiro is now in the 3rd grade of middle school and she faces changes in her life.

I'm watching this. There are no English subs, and the generated Japanese subs can be quite off, but if you like Nara, this is kind of a look at the various places in Nara and its history and culture.

Takatsuki Mirai suffered from a life threatening disease when he was young. Through donations and the compassion of acquaintances and strangers his life was turned around. On the down side he is consistently under the spotlight and, as a schoolboy, finds it hard to cope. When he decides for suicide solution a message arrives asking for the money back.
Watched this one (most of it anyway). The performances were quite good but I lost interest around midway. The movie felt to be drifting aimlessly as Mirai encountered quirky characters. The premise, though extraordinary, poses some interesting questions that I thought about for a long time, and is actually relevant for pretty much everyone imho. The movie didn't actually offer any answers but the ending was satisfying in a way. Yamada Anna was so cute and a good actress.
Interesting dialogue, really funny at times, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is actually very simple in essence. The first half was full of delightful surprises, the second half was more predictable but still engaging. Both leads were great. Give it a try if it interests you.
MOVIES! channel (13.3 here) is showing various Godzilla/Monster movies today. Usually there is one token non-Japanese actor in each one.
