I agree with you in some aspects, but not all, due to the fact is human nature. It is inherent for people that if they to want something to take it. (Germans wanted Europe, Japan wanted asia, Iraq wanted Kuwaiti oil, hell even america wanted to colonize at somepoint). War is a neccessary evil, but it is neccesary. Let's just say you have this great collection of Jdorama, and I have none. I however have none, and decide to take it, thinking that I can just overcome you with my baseball bat. I take it, but of course you're gonna want to take it back.

See this is what I mean by neccesary. You have to protect yourself by arming yourself. Maybe I feel this way b/c of my former occupation as a U.S. Marine. Ya think Wink ?

Naw, never bored to talk about things you believe in, no matter who think you're wrong. As long as you have conviction (and sometimes proof) you can't go wrong.
Oh, feel free to start other topic, bsalez. I have no qualms in answering anything anyone asks about me. (Although I don't mind starting mindless subjects, I don't like to start topics with substance.) If someone whants to know fine, but I don't think I should start a topic just to start a topic. Maybe someone don't want to know, you know what I'm saying?

I agree with you there, julie. But I work with a bunch (6) of koreans, very cool people, but everytime the subject "japan/japanese" comes up, they get very defensive, and I'm thinking "is this just them, or is it general population of koreans?" They are Ultra-competitive with the JPNese. from car/electronic products, steel production, geographical dispute, hell even the world cup. I guess this happens when your home country gets invaded and get annexed, you're countrymen gets killed, and women are made to be soldier's "comfort women". Although I don't agree with my coworker's JPN opinion, I can certainly understand how they feel, being that in my (or at least my mom+dad) family not feeling too friendly with the JPNese.

But not only in China, Korea, Malaysia, etc. , it even happens within Japan as well. In 1607, the JPN invaders of southern Kyushu invaded and "conquered" the island chain of the Kingdom of the Ryukyu (Okinawa is part of it). Because okinawans look very different from mainland japanese, they would bring along some okinawan emissaries, and take them back to kyushu and display them as if they are exotic animals. Even to this day, my wife's family (and all of okinawans) consider themselves okinawan first, then japanese.

Don't mean to get off topic but I have heard numerous posts on the animosity between Japanese and Koreans along with other asian nations, etc.

I just felt it is worth to mention that we need to go way back to the 12th and 13th century to get a better understanding of all these invasions of other countries by Japan. In my opinon, back in those days and up until very recently...the motto seemed to be "invade or be invaded".

I'm sure many of you history buffs know that in 1274, Khublai Khan, grandson of the great Ghenkis Khan, invaded Japan. Previous to this...the Monguls had invaded both China and Korea.

Khublai Khan's first attempt to invade Japan failed when many of his troops fell ill to disease I believe.

In 1281, Khublai Khan attempted a second invasion and through somewhat force had Chinese and Korean forces help in this invasion. It is my understanding that both invasions were brutal and innocent women and children were also killed.

The battle and invasion was taking much longer than expected and through the force of nature "kamikaze" "divine winds" a typhoon struck and wiped out most of Khublai Khan's forces. This would really change the history of the world. There was a drama called Hojo Tokimune around 2 years ago that covered these events fairly accurately.

It seems that many asian countries went through severe internal power struggles for a long period of time. When some outside threat came along...it seems those differences would be put aside temporarily.

I believe for the next 300 years Japan would be an internal fighting nation until Toyotomi Hideyoshi came along and established somewhat peace in Japan for a short while.

And while this is not talked about much in Japan history...Hideyoshi tried to invade Korea twice and even wanted to invade China by going through Korean. Most don't know what Hideyoshi was thinking. He seemed to have sent the wrong people too. Some say he wanted to do this to get troublesome or potentially dangerous lords away from Japan.

However...if that was true...Hideyoshi would have sent Tokugawa Ieyasu. Just like Khublai Khan...by being too greedy and ambitious...he weakened his own reign too much and made himself vulnerable.

Maybe what Hideyoshi was thinking was that you either invade or be invaded. Not sure if this is how some of the mentality carried through the many hundreds of years. In addition, since Japan had poor natural resources...I guess they wanted to branch out.

Still doesn't excuse them for the atrocities they committed in the 1930's and 40's. And while direct apologies have been too little too late...I do feel that at least Japan has taken action in helping Korea develop and manufacture their own cars and has helped China also in developing steel plants and many other factories.

It seems the more recent generations of Japan have contributed more to the world than have hurt....but unfortunately...many want to overlook this and focus on the negatives from awhile back.

I am a Japanese American and I hold no ill feelings toward the US for holding my parents and family in camps. I don't believe my parents or family hold ill feelings either. Heck...we all live here in the US. I would hope not.

I also feel those people holding ill feelings are in the minority. I love Korean TV dramas and Korean people as well as Chinese, and all others. It's the individual that matters...not the ethnicity. Heck...I could care less if somebody is North Korean.

Sorry for the long message and I hope I didn't offend anybody. I hope my history is accurate too. Mr Green

ROTFLMAO! That pic is hilarious.....

Anyways, good post bmwM3rod, I totally agree with you there. Just because of one's descent and such is different from another, doesn't mean we should judge them based off stereotypes and the nature of their country of origin.

Whether someone is Chinese, Japanese or Korean, I have nothing against either of them as people. While most of my interest lies in Japanese culture, I take interest in other racial backgrounds and cultures as well, such as Korean or whatever. I know quite a few people who come from South Korea, and even a few odd North Koreans too.

WOW really? I know and work with a big group of S. Koreans and even THEY don't know of anyone from the north. They said that the reason why so very few make it to freedom is they're usually shot at the border.

Phew! After reading all of these posts, I can see all of your different points of views. S. Korea is cool. But A LOT of them (S. Koreans) in Hawaii hate people like me (Japanese) because of what happened before. That to me, is plainly just chicken ish. Those people are just living in the past and have nothing to look forward to. More or less even trying to.

Here is a post I posted a while ago (about N. Korea). But since the topic of "comfort women" came up and all, I felt as though it were worth re posting again.

http://www.jdorama.com/viewtopic_2524_0.htm

and then here is what someone said to me regarding that issue.........

http://www.jdorama.com/viewtopic_2524_150.htm

And here is what I said to him...........

http://www.jdorama.com/viewtopic_2524_165.htm

But I had no agreement to what he said whatsoever.
Like I said, "It's over! Let it go!" Why are you gonna say "Awwwwww. It's not fair! Even though it was 50+ years ago, it's still not fair!"

DUMB ASS!

If you get married to someone living in Korea, better learn the language: http://www.dramafever.com/news/foreign-spouses-must-pass-a-korean-language-test-to-be-allowed-to-enter-korea/
