I find pimsleur tapes to be awesome.
They have actual japanese people saying the word, often alternating between a woman and a man.
That way, when you repeat it, you learn to say it as they do.
English phonetics of japanese words are weird.
Just look at the word Pôkemon, what's up with that

I wouldn't describe it as 'weird'. English characterization of Japanese words is called Romanji - that should give you a clue that the pronounciation is based on Roman phonetics (such as French), not Anglo-Saxon (English).

As a swede, it's almost the same pronounciation.
It's how they write the words in english that is weird.
Poke in english (poe-kh) doesn't sound like poke in japanese (poh-keh),
so they need a ^ above the O.
It's probably media trying to make japanese readable by changing the words.
Then there's always different romaji systems.
Ou instead of Oh, Oo instead of Ou.
Jya instead of Ja, Jia instead of Jya.
Tohsaka Shirou wa jiu-jitsu-ka desu.
It's easy once you understand the pronounciation,
but learning that without proper phonetics is impossible.

Please don't create a new topic without searching the other threads first.
And please refrain from using the phrase 'jap' on this website as some (including myself) are offended by it.
Thanks.
