According to Consumer Reports, the rankings of the free antivirus programs are as follows:
1. Avira
2. Microsoft Defender
3. AVG
4. Avast ( ) |
I think I need to change my antivirus program soon... I wonder if the ranking took the resource used into account. My workplace also uses McAfee and when the schedule scan kicks off every friday it takes up to 50% CPU resource. Slowed the whole computer down lol.

Yeah McAfee is a resource hog...that's why I dumped it for AVG

Of those four tested by Consumer Reports, Avira had the best resource usage, scoring a "Very Good," where the others just scored a "Good."
EDIT: Microsoft's program is not Defender, but Security Essentials.

Haha...nah, it's just that I didn't realize that Microsoft had a recognized competence in the field of anti-virus software.

Ah I have used MSE but it disappeared on me at one point LOL. I must have accidentally removed it while installing something else. I remember Kaspersky was a bit resource heavy as well.

Whatever...I think that Parrot from your Avast Matey logo is talking to me.
Norton ~ bloated like a dead, beached whale.

I used it once or twice in the past...I found it to be rather slow, and not so good. Oh well I guess we all have opinions when it comes to anti-virus software.
It was interesting to read your list of top tier programs.
