Some of her roles have hardly impressed most forum members...
True, I'm not impressed with her either, but when you think about it she's pretty like the standard of modern day young Japanese actresses. For the most part, they're just all looks and no acting skills. But it seems Masami gets all the hate around here. In terms of acting skills I don't see Masami any worse or better that say, for example, Horikita Maki or Aragaki Yui, just to name a couple of the popular ones.

I think if you have a role that really turns off people for whatever reason, it typecasts you and it's tough to overcome in a lot of people's eyes, unfair as it may be...

As popular as she is in Japan, not many people like her around here nor over at d-addicts.
what's her popularity like in japan? my sources are all so contradicting, some say she's hated in japan but wikipedia says she's one of japan's favourite actresses (L``G)

I believe she's very popular. She's easily in the top 5 most recognizable names/faces in japan, in terms of young actresses. Now whether she's liked or disliked is another thing, but her popularity can't be denied, imo.
Yes, Masami is really popular in Japan. You could easily see her on many commercials, magazine covers, and many dramas/movies in Japan.
There's many praise and criticism about her, but that lively discussion also shows how popular she is. desho ?
btw, a new drama special featuring Masami.

Masami Nagasawa (21) and Jun Kunimura (53) are co-starring in a Fuji TV drama special called "Oyaji no Ichiban Nagai Hi" ("Dad's Longest Day"). The drama is an original story inspired by the 1979 hit song of the same name by Masashi Sada.
The story revolves around the owner of a lantern shop in Asakusa named Eiichiro (Kunimura) and his daughter Chiharu (Nagasawa). Chiharu declares that she wants to marry her boyfriend (Sousuke Takaoka), but Eiichiro is strongly opposed, resulting in a fight between the two. Chiharu's older brother (Atsushi Ito) serves as the narrator, and Sada himself will also have a cameo appearance.
Fuji TV plans to broadcast the special on June 19 at 9:00pm.
