It's an oddly... flat series. "Odd" because this one stars Koji Yakusho, probably the best leading man in today's Japanese movies. And the other two "Grown Men" are Masahiko Nishimura and Yasunori Danta. Two guys who are in almost everything, and almost always do a great job.
But 4 episodes in and I really don't have much to grab onto here.
In supporting roles Maiko Kikuchi & Kimiko Yo are (so far) the only reason to watch the show. Both have created original, interesting, funny, and sort of edgy characters.
But there's just nothing compelling about either the story or the main characters.
I'll stick with it because I know how talented the three main actors are. But so far... this is just kind of boring.
Kimiko Yo delivers about as sexy a performance as you'll see in a dorama. You could tell she had a lot of fun in this role. And Maiko Kikuchi's character--you don't know whether to hug her or run as far away from her as you can. Two memorable performances.
One of the problems with this series is the repetitiveness of set scenes from episode to episode. I found them annoying and redundant.
However, as you pointed out, Geezer, the cast is first rate--really excellent veteran actors and actresses. They make the series worth watching to the end.

Exactly! And really, the same can be said for Kimiko's character. As sexy a role as it is... her character seems every bit as unhinged... and is probably a good deal more dangerous than Maiko's.
I'm half way though the series now, and between my faith in the guys talent, and my fascination with these two ladies... I know I'll stick with the show to the end.
I just kind of wish they'd find something interesting for Koji to do. _________________

O wow, yikes! No wonder you haven't been around lately. Good luck with the move!
Thanks. No worries. I've been reading the board a lot, just not felt like posting so much. (Although, tonight is probably the most I've posted in a day for a while lol).

Very true. A lust-driven psychotic. And with her being a doctor, she's probably familiar with scalpels, bone saws, and humongous needles.
Alrighty, finished Medaka epi 1. Nothing substantial yet, tho I was completely shocked at Mimura! This is a far cry from her role in Ima ai ni Yukimasu, where I thought she was brilliant. Her role as Medaka is completely different. I mean, she actually SMILES in this drama. A LOT.

Enjoyed episodes 4 of both Zettai Kareshi and Last Friends, great stuff!
Then, against my better judgment and hoping for a better ending for the nightmare that was Special Police, I decided to download the special.
Don't waste your time, I skimmed through this 1 hour 47 minute "recap" and it introduced absolutely NOTHING new and ended with the same cliffhanger that the show's finale had, NO REVEAL WHATSOEVER! Oh, and they announced the movie that's following it.
(Note: I was going to put it in spoiler tags, but it's not giving anything away other than advice to not bother downloading the special if you've already watched the show).
OH, and since nobody seems to want to shut up about the show now (), I've started downloading Medaka and will be catching it during my lunch breaks. Ah well, let's see if this show is any good, eh?

She's doing a great job!
Moving on to epi 2.
It took a couple episodes before I really got into it, just curious, have you ever gone off on a class like she did?

My favorite thing ever- flashback specials! [/sarcasm]
Seriously, what is the point of these things? Why even bother to make the special at all? Nothing else to air? Since there is a movie coming out this was especially pointless. At least it was quick to watch, since I skipped through all the flashbacks. Leaving about... 5 minutes or so. _________________

EXACTLY! The synopsis had said there would be a secret revealed and additional footage...but I skipped ahead of so much of it that there was maybe 6-7 minutes tops that I actually watched (and it ended up being what I had already seen).
Hell, if I could recommend it to anyone, it'd be to someone who hasn't seen SP and wants to save themselves from watching 10 additional hours of programming. You get the WHOLE damned story, from start to finish, compressed down to a convenient 1 hour 47 minutes!
I'm leery...but I may still check out the movie JUST to get a proper ending to the story...the Special alone dropped it 2 more points in my book down to a 4/10...so sad.
