Hey if worse comes to worst with "Shikaotoko Awoniyoshi" we can probably just get subs for "Francis the Talking Mule" and paste them on.
I'm very proud of myself. I finished Iryu 2. Okay, so after a while I just turned the subs off and did a bit of FFing between Yuki Uchida's scenes... but I finished it. And that's what counts.
Man, I'd love to see her do a comedy with Sato Jiro.
I've also been struggling to get through Sore wa Totsuzen.
This one isn't as overwrought, or burdened with the overblown histrionics that come with a medical dorama... but it's got some problems of its own.
Esumi Makiko's character has fallen in love with Yamashita Tomohisa's character???
That's almost as ridiculous as Sakaguchi Kenji's performance in "Iryu 2"
Side note: Kohashi Kenji ( Fumiya from "Churasan") has a small part in "Sore Wa Tatsuzen" and it took me three episodes to recognize him. It's like... he's an adult! He has a personality! When did that happen? _________________ Manga is to Literature

That's only nine days away... And four more episodes to sub.

Whew! finally finished with both Iryu 2 and Sore wa Totsuzen.
Well... I watched them both because Yuki Uchida and Makiko Esumi (respectivly) were in them. So I really have no gripe coming. They were there. They were both gorgeous. So who cares if the shows were clunkers.
I just started Fake Bride this morning.
http://jdorama.com/drama.1029.htm
What a relief! A sit com, done by people who know what they're doing.
The story of a TV news anchor who gets dumped because of her age... and ends up doing a "hidden camera reality" show for the Variety Department.
It's a bit of a high concept/fish out of water/ stretch... but if anyone can pull it off, it's Ryoko Shinohara.
This is wonderful. I'm actually eager to see the next episode tonight. A feeling I never experienced with the last two shows. _________________ Manga is to Literature

While I believe Ryoko Shinohara is one of the two or three best leading actress currently working in dorama, the primary reason I watched this series was because Shima Iwashita was in it. Now in the latter stages of a long and illustrious career, Iwashita in recent years has taken on TV roles which tend to spoof the kind of imposing no-nonsense characters she played many times in both dorama and film. A great actress, but little known in the West, and probably not even that familiar with the younger generation of Japanese audiences.
On topic: Just finished Asuka, a pretty good Asadora with a very young Yuko Takeuchi as the eponymous heroine who becomes a confectionary maker.
Also just recently finished Galileo (thanks, Geezer). I enjoyed Kou Shibasaki's performance, but I kinda wished the producers and screenwriter had gone further in their rip-off of the Trick series and emphasized the comedic aspect and characters more. Writing equations to solve the crime is not particularly scintillating drama.

Isn't the TV series Numb3rs similar in that respect?

I really enjoyed this drama. I found it consistent all the way through. It's light, funny, and of course, has a great cast. Hmmm... I may just watch this one again.
On Topic: Still haven't watched anymore Mukodono, but I did rewatch the first half of Tiger & Dragon. This is seriously one of the best comedies out there.
Today I'll jump on the Mukodono bandwagon again... if I have time. _________________

Wynter,
So far so good (re: Fake Bride). So your comment about it being consistent all the way through makes me very happy. Thanks.

I have to admit... I don't know Shima Iwashita. But I do love her dead pan when she says do you really want to know? Such a beautifully clean and economical comic device.
I love some of the staging in this show. They take the same space, same office set up for the news room, and the main office for the Variety dept. The news room looks like a classic, professional business office. But with just a few simple changes, the Variety set looks like a cross between a carnival and a zoo.
My only problem with the show so far is that the patter is so snappy, I have to either pause, or go back so that I can read what was said.
It's times like these I really wish I'd taken Evelyn Wood up on her offer. _________________ Manga is to Literature
