i know there was a thread somewhere about viewing files... but i can't find it... so i'm gonna ask here

ever since niko praised the EMULE network i've been dl a bunch of files off of there (the speed is a lil slow...but what u gonna do right?) anyway i know there is a way to view files (preview what ur dling) from kazaa since they're .dat there is a previewer for those files... so i was wonderign if u could previwe what ur dling off emule ? the files are soe wierd .part format.. is there a way to preview those files ? r do i have to dl all of it? i was just wonderign if u could preview .part (emule files) since u can preview anything form kazaa (.dat) or BT (just .avi .divx)

if any kind could let me know ...it would really help me ut alot (niko i'm looking at u since u turned me on to this thing....)

I've been using emule for a while, as have several of my friends and I'm told you can't view them on there, even though there's a button that says view. I don't know any way around it, it sucks and the only way to view them is by finishing the entire download but if someone can prove me wrong then that'll be nice.

loveless, just use the same avi program you've been using to open .part files.
I use bsplayer and videolan and they work fine for preview but you must have downloaded the first few megs of the .part file to preview. The start (header) of .part file contains all the important info about type of file so your player will know which codec to use.

The preview button does actually work before the file is finished (hence the name "preview"), but a lot of the file needs to be complete before it works. I find it to be unreliable.

Instead I use avipreview. I copy (not move!) the #.part file from the emule/temp directory to a emule/partial (or whatever) directory. Then I open #.part with avipreview (you don't need to rename the .part to .avi). You can find the name of the part file by either holding your mouse over the filename or right clicking for file details in the transfer screen.

I don't think avipreview actually needs the first part (chunk) of the file. I think it can now figure out some of the avi header info by itself. In any case there is an option in emule (Preferences:Files) to "try to download first and last chunks first". You might be able to tell graphically if you have the first chunk. If the colored bar starts in black you probably do. Chunks that you have are in black. Available chunks are in blue. Unavailable chunks are in red. IIRC, there used to be software that could tell you all the details from your part.met file. It would tell you exactly what chunks you have. I can't recall the name of it though. It may have been for Edonkey. You'd have better luck asking these questions at the Emule forums. http://www.emule-project.net.

As much as I like Emule, I have to say that I am using both Emule and (the very crude) Bittorrent and Bittorrent seems to be blowing it away in terms of speed. File availability seems like a problem though. It needs a search engine or something.

Wow, sorry about the late response time loveless. About emule, it is slow because you have rankings: the more file you share, the higher ranking of your status, and that will affect your d/l speed.
As far as viewing the other files, I'm sure you got the answer you want this weekend, but if you right-click on the file, it should bring up a menu and there should be a choice for "View File". I hope this is suffice.

i have a heavy user of emule...however, i am not really aware that the number of files that you share affect your ranking. here are some suggestions:
1) how much you have uploaded as opposed to downloaded affects your ranking (in my opinion). usually, i notice that in the beginning, i will upload more than i download, but eventually, i will download more
2) have you modified the emule settings probably? you can cap the limit on your download and upload. the setting is usually 1:4 but once you pass 10K upload cap limit, you can set your download as limitless
3) the more sources you have, the better your chance of downloading a file faster (i usually set it to 300)
4) if you are using windows 98 or windows 2000, there are some registry settings that you need to change to enable more tcp connections (win xp is fine)
5) depending on the type of files that you are looking for, sometimes, it really helps to go to the appropriate servers. eg. for animes, you can go to AnimeReactor
6) try upgrading to the latest version of emule
7) as for previewing a file, if you are downloading video type of files, click the option, download first and last parts first. and if you downloaded those parts, copy the .part file and rename it to the appropriate extension and attempt to view it. it should work...but you will have a lot of skipping.

hope this helps.
