Yes it's a dictionary not a machine translator. Machine translators for Japanese are without exception crap and should be avoided. This on the other hand is a really useful tool. The hidden translation option is quite nice too (not as good as rikai, but still useful). You can also get some offline tools which use edict which are handy when you can't get online.
