| Synopsis |
|---|
April – the season for the new school term. Meet Maya Akutsu, a mysterious new teacher at
Hanzaki Elementary School. Her way of talking and behaving is as graceful and magnificent as
a queen. Miss Akutsu, with her high intelligence, artistic talent, and perfect athletic skills, soon
overwhelms the other teachers and makes all the parents obedient. She takes charge of "Class
Three" in the sixth grade. In Miss Akutsu's class, test scores precede everything else. She gives
pop quizzes every week and students with low scores have to do odd jobs in the classroom,
like her slaves. If they try to disobey, they're severely punished. Miss Akutsu is the law. She is
the queen of her domain. Kazumi, one of her students, soon becomes her main target.
Although Kazumi is a sweet and innocent twelve-year-old girl, she cannot achieve above
average on either her exams or in gymnastics. Kazumi withstands Miss Akutsu's outrageous
brand of �gpunishment,�h but her classmates begin to crack in the grip of fear. Jealousy, slander,
and betrayal run rampant in the class. Even in the darkest time of her life, however, Kazumi
strongly wishes to �ggraduate happily with her classmates�h, and she finally decides to gather
up all the students to face their evil teacher. How will the 24 sixth-graders grow up during the
final year at elementary school? And what is Miss Akutsu's real purpose of being so devilish

| | 1. | A Warm-hearted Message in a Dark Tale [Rating: 8/10]
Jyoou no Kyoushitsu is a drama that criticizes various aspects of Japanese society simply by asking rhetorical questions through the character of Akutsu Maya, a "devilish" teacher who is hell-bent on making sure each student in her 6th grade class thinks for themselves by throwing in their collectively cute faces the harsh realities of life. Her mantra: those who work hard and follow the chain of command will succeed and be "happy."
The students, all used to the carefree day to day happenings of school life with study time, sports days, and lunch breaks, immediately feel threatened when their sensei, "Akuma," unleashes her strict set of guidelines complete with harsh penalties and unfair judgements with an unkind demeanor in which to carry them out. The students react in various ways depending on their individual personalities. Some attempt to do everything the teacher says in fear of punishment and some attempt to get others to help take down the teacher. In dealing with the teachers, the relationships between the students fluctuate just as it would have in a business or family environment -- exactly as the teacher seemingly enjoys describing to the students.
It's a tough drama to enjoy because the atmosphere throughout the series is quite dark. Many times I found myself shouting at the teacher or the students for acting a certain way that I found disgusting, but at the same time I valued these negative routes taken not because it made it seem real, but because they evoked questions that I believe everybody should ask themselves -- questions like What makes me happy? and Why do I act the way I act?. When a drama makes me angry, I know it's a good drama because the emotion I feel is real and I realize it has forced me to reflect on myself and my own life.
Amami Yuki, the actress who play Akutsu Maya, did very well in portraying such a devlish teacher. She did so well that for the end credits of each episode, they had to show her after a take and smiling, a facial expression only used when she does something particularly "evil." Afterwords, she dances happily with a bunch of kids in a lively romp that when seen for the first time after episode 1 completely threw me off kilter.
Shida Mirai did an excellent job as the innocent-minded child that cannot understand why the teacher acts the way she does. Perhaps she was chosen for the role because she's incredibly adorable, but when it came down to serious business, she comes through without faulter. Her role required her to cry a lot, and while I thought it was a bit overdone, it was done as well as can be expected -- definately better than all the students. My favorite character, though, was Shindo Hikaru. Dark and silent, her too-calm demeanor hides an intelligence and maturity that's just too friggin' cool. Her actress was okay, perfect for the role but seemed weird when required to smile.
I don't like to spoil much, and I definately will not say what the ending is, but I will say that contrary to a lot of people out there, I actually enjoyed the series all the way to the ending. The two specials were okay and did very well in explaining the things they set out to explain, but the emotional impact was nowhere near as heavy as the main series.
All-in-all, it's a great series with a message or two for people to think about. Akutsu Maya-sensei is the teacher you never wanted to have. Brilliant, manipulative, obsessive, and dead set on making sure you fall in line with her rules, or you'll find that your life will be hell. 12-year-old Kazumi has been getting below average grades and living a below average life, but the one thing she wants from her last year of elementary school is to have fun with her classmates and make a few good memories. She had no idea that those very reasonable ambitions will make her the teacher's nemesis.
The first ten episodes of Jouou no Kyoushitsu (The Queen's Classroom) are a breath of fresh air in the stuffy and formulaic world of Japanese classroom drama. Starting with Kimpachi-sensei and including others like GTO, Gokusen, and Medaka, all Japanese classroom dramas have been about the teacher saving the students from their own folly. The Queen's Classroom breaks from that with an apparently evil teacher who is out to prove that the world is a harsh place, and so is her classroom. Adapt or die. So what follows is a drama series where the teacher systematically removes the parental and academic protection the children had enjoyed, and forces them to deal with their problems themselves. The big question is whether she's doing it because she knows it will make the children more self-reliant, or because she actually is evil.
Some of the performances are spot-on. Amami Yuki's performance is chillingly good. Shida Mirai as Kazumi overacts, trying for comic effect, in the early episodes, but as the series progresses, she tightens up and puts in an excellent performance. Hara Sachie is especially good as the well-intentioned teacher who wants to be the best friend of all the students. The annoying aspects of the school administration and parents are the fault of the writing and not of the performances by Izumiya Shigeru and the other actors. And even so, authority has to be weak to allow for the premise of the show.
About halfway through the program, I came up with five ending scenarios. 1) She's evil and remains so until the end. 2) She's evil but is reformed in the end. 3) She right. The children must learn to face harsh reality, and even the children realize how right she is in the end. 4) She's misguided, and a successful rebellion by the children forces her to realize the error of her ways. 5) She's misguided, but with the same methods Kazumi used to unite the class, Kazumi saves the teacher as well.
My biggest problem with this series is that the ending, episode 11, chose the wrong scenario. I won't say more since what I've said so far might be considered a spoiler. But even the last episode isn't all bad, it's just that I came out...unsatisfied.

finished Queen's Classroom / Jyuu no Kyoushitsu
When i saw the cover, i thought it was gonna be an elite women high school with super-strict teachers that teaches manners. Turns out it was far from what i imagined.
This dorama kinda reminds me of Matilda... but without magical powers.
Shake Head i think it's gonna sound a bit stupid to some people.
Scary teachers are always pictured wearing black outfit, with the usual scary teacher hair, and shoes that makes her look like she has no taste? Rolling eyes . Even black umbrella !
This is so not a family dorama but it has kids in it. What the teacher says and does are so explicit. She has a hand knife in her pocket, she knows everything, she can do anything, she talked about one of the student's mother about the mother being a boy-crazy slut and abadoned the kid just to flirt for a random good-for-nothing man and about his father being a no good boozer crimanal who is now behind the bars... in front of the whole class!
The ending scene in each episode is so wrong. it really ruins the atmosphere
The thing that annoys me most, is that why did it have to be elementary school students? It would've been more appropriate if it was high school students. To be exact, junior high school students, if the producers are afraid it'd turn out Gokusen-like.
But of course on the other side of the coin, tha fact that it was about an elementary school just makes it become sweet. It would be too dark if it was in senior high school. and again, thank god it's not gokusen-like. But elementary kids? so not appropriate.
Despite all those annoying facts, Queen's Classroom is actually one hell of an entertaining show! The pace was fun, the plot was good, and it also has the addicting factor! No doubt about the acting! The Amami Yuki was so scary as if she's about to stab someone with a knife any moment. And the best thing is, for each episode, you always get this feeling like you wanna slap someone in the face! It's great. No wonder two specials was actually made to it.
This is so like putting Saddam Hussein as a kindergarten teacher.

This drama was certainly much better than I expected it to be. In fact, it was much better than I could have imagined given the setting -- elemetary school(!!).
I once had a hard-nose teacher, but he wasn't at all like the teacher in this drama. I think he wanted peace and quiet rather than to help us learn to find our own way in the world. ... but back to the show...
I agree with Old-Ant that the ending was unsatisfying, but I think it fit the show since we are all curious about how the people we knew when we were younger turned out later on. Graduation is like this unsatisfying ending. One day, we're gone and a new story begins. this drama had a very original and entertaining start. however the choice of topic also happens to be the curse of this drama - it goes in the oppotiste direction from all the recent school drama, and finally we see a teacher actually in charge of her class, and to such an extreme extent as well. yuki amami portrays on-the-surface the cold n heartless type of teacher very well. overall, this show is realistic in covering the fragility of human mind n heart especially that of children towards popularity and the powerful while shunning the outcast and blacksheeps.
this show might appear typical whr the strong always win but the essence of the show is in the many reasons behind the basic morals n rules tt govern our lives. for example "why is it wrong to kill people?". To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this drama, as I have not seen any previous works of Amami Yuki. As it turns out it is a very pleasant surprise.
Up until episode 7 I thought this was a reflection of the Japanese society - the need to work hard, obey, and confirm. After watching the whole drama I realized this is an accusation of those Japanese values.
The side plots added a nice touch while not too distracting. I don't know where they come up with 24 kids who can, basically, all act.

The plot is really gripping (though not quite in a GTO kind of way), and it's hard not to root for the herione. At the same time, the plot is sometimes awfully convenient, and the evil schoolteacher has a knowledge of her class and parents that's not possible. The acting varies, but Yuki Amani takes control of the drama in the same way her character controls her classroom. I'll start with a warning: there was no way for me to properly review this dorama and explain why I loved it at first and ended up hating it (and believe me, I don't use this word lightly), without some spoilers.
So, before you keep on reading, let me ask you a question: have you watched "Full Metal Jacket"? If you haven't, then maybe play it safe and stop reading. But if you have, here's one more question for you: would you say that Sergeant Hartman was a fine educator or a rotten S.O.B.?
If your answer is the former, then stop reading and start watching this dorama, there's a high chance you'll love it! But if your answer is the latter, then you might want to keep reading - spoilers included - so as to avoid wasting 9 hours or so of your life (over 12 if you include the SP) on this.
And now I'll proceed explaining why I think so (spoilers from now on, consider yourselves warned):
I was captured right away by the thought-provoking premise, and it kept me thinking and (probably over-)thinking for the first few episodes. I even thought, for a brief moment, that maybe the scriptwriter had had an incredibly prophetic view of his future (and our tragic present), thus using this dorama's distopian classroom to portray a society where those in charge seem to have loads of evil fun pitting us "commoners" against each other and even unleashing chaos - the only thing they care about being that we obey, don't think and follow their rules which are more and more absurd each day - and clearly counterproductive, at that. Ok, I was seeing too much into it, LOL, but that's just to show you how intrigued I was!
Slowly but progressively, though, the story kept getting sillier and sillier with every episode. Short after the middle of the series, I started suspecting where it was heading: to an utterly insulting ending where they'd say that this monster (Amami Yuki's character couldn't deserve titles like "teacher" or "educator", and sorry if you disagree, but this is my informed opinion as someone who's worked in this field!), I repeat, where they'd say that this monster had actually been a "good (hell, even great) teacher", that it had all been just some "tough love" and that it had all "turned out well after all".
And that's where I started hating it.
Because I believe that if you treat people badly (Akuma-sensei - sorry, Akutsu-sensei - pun intended - traumatizes her pupils day in and day out, and her behavior sums up to psychological torture in my book!), I repeat, if you treat people this badly, no good *whatsoever* could *ever* come from that. To even imagine such an idiotic development is total BS, sorry.
If you treat people like this, some bad sh*t is bound to happen instead! Just like with Sergeant Hartman and Private "Gomer Pyle" in "Full Metal Jacket", you know...?
Approaching the end of the series, each episode unfortunately confirmed my suspicion, and I was more and more disappointed, and then really *disgusted* by the lousy, idiotic last episode (*every single scene* of it felt like an insult to my intelligence: the commercial-like family scene, the fight with the punks - nani sore?!? Where the hell did those crawl out from? A Chuck Norris movie maybe?!? And then again, the 180° U-turn from monster to ideal teacher / hero, even lecturing the kids on how it's wrong to hurt others - true, of course! But....how dare *she* say that?!? You gotta be f***ing kiddin' me, c'mon! And I could go on and on but I guess you got the picture...in one word: "BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!").
After watching Arimura Kasumi no Satsukyu" I had felt...cleansed, that's the word!
After watching this series to its end...I feel like I desperately need the soul equivalent of a long, warm, scrubbing-all-over shower! Such a terrible feeling it has left me with!!!
The acting was good (I mean, the kids' acting, as Amami Yuki's character being the expressionless monster she was, the poor actress couldn't show her acting skills, unfortunately. And the rest of the cast, alas, were little more than extras, so it's hard to judge them - except to praise Kaho for her adorable "onee-san"). The music was okay. Way way too overdramatic that it gets to a point where I think it is so ridiculous...yet being overdramatic is the basis of all Jdramas. 7/10 for the series but 5 after watching the two special episodes. The special episodes is plain ridiculous. Although I don't know how the Japanese education system works, but does teachers work as a slave to the students...? It seems that students have total control over their teachers, all they have to do is tell their parents, and no matter what has happened, the teacher is at fault. All parents are f**king blind and stupid. For example, in the second special, Maya made this speech to the Miyauchi about being strong and to face your fears. Meanwhile the stupid mother stays blind tells Maya to shut her mouth and warns her that she won't be able to be a teacher for the rest of her life....so to the mother, for her kid to become strong and not to do bad things is wrong!? Do Japanese parents really spoil their children to the point that they are blinded from reality. don't let the junior school premise turn you away from watching this show. this is one of the most brilliant doramas i have seen so far, thanks to a stellar cast and solid scriptwriting, although you might have to watch this with an open mind. maya's almost unbelievable persona becomes a lot more convincing once you have watched both specials but only watch them after the actual 11 episodes. amami yuki is sooo sexy and admirable in her role as maya, her beauty and sex appeal grows on you. the cast of children was amazing, and although a tad exaggerated, each acts in his/her own unique way that it becomes part of the characterization. | | 4. | Comments by kou [Rating: 10/10]

image dekiru? I watched this dorama without knowing what it was about. But It's so unusual! So special comparing with the typical school dorama! I think that the director of this dorama had guts to make this and I want to thanks him. The tension is very high in this dorama, maybe you'll hate the teacher as you've never hated anyone in your life! The students are young but skillful! Really good! Makes one think about the society as a whole. Even though her comments are more directed to the Japanese society. During the first couple episodes, I didn't think I'd like this drama as much but it just gets more and more addicting. Although it's sometimes painful to watch the students getting themselves into trouble and I don't agree with some of the stuff the teacher does, it's still inspiring. This drama's about a sadistic teacher who's tormenting her 24 elementary school students. The question's her purpose, is she actually trying to teach something or is she just a dinosaur teacher who's been hiding away for the last 100 years? The acting performances are terrific, especially Amami Yuki & the ending may be cliche but nevertheless satisfying. Another school drama, a serious one in the vein of Watashitachi ... not Gokusen, and the good news it's it's better than let's say Seito Shokun. Amami Yuki does a fine job as evil teacher. I liked how this was different from all the other dramas about great teachers. Maya always said intelligent things that really made me think. The show started to drag on near the middle, and I honestly think it could have been a bit shorter. The fickle parents and useless principals were also a tad bit annoying. Wow! I wasn't expecting much from this drama. I thought, "ok, another school drama with a super teacher", but I was so wrong. 2 of main characters (the boy and the girl) are cute and hilarious. Good actors! The teacher, man, what an uptight bitch. :P I wish I could've seen Hara Sachie more, but it's not so bad.

One of my favorite doramas. It has really good acting and its funny and serious all at once. Its also sad at times. Thats what I like in a dorama. About the acting, its so good. There isnt one second i was bored. The ending is amazing also. After I watched the specials, it just blew me AWAY. I luv this drama totally. Very interesting lessons to learn here especially the way the homeroom sensei teaches the Class. Making every episod a very enjoyable one. There's always a lesson install for the class. Amami Yuki is really beautiful gosh... could almost fall in luv with her. Episode 10 is the most touching episode, too bad the ending isnt that great compare wih it. I loved the idea of a devilish teacher instead of devilish students. Amami Yuki was great in her role. It was entertaining but not the best dorama ever. Watch it if you don't have anything else to watch. |

Probably the best teacher-classroom drama I have seen, definitely with its direct, no-nonsense, realistic view of people and society. The writing hit home for me, it holds some very valuable lessons for those young/inexperienced in dealing with the challenges of life. The star of the show was not the teacher for me though, it's the student. If not for Kazumi (Shida Mirai), I doubt whether Maya-sensei's method would have an overall positive effects, definitely not for everyone I don't think. Shida Mirai really carried the show and was the heart of the series. I knew she was great with the serious stuff, but didn't realize how good she was with comedy too. Wish the writing has given more time to Hikaru, I felt her relationship and bond with Kazumi had a lot of potential. There were a few times in the middle when I felt things were a bit too good to be true, Kazumi's relationship with her friends could have been developed much more with time, and the final exchange between Maya and Kazumi was too short for me, but those points aside, this was a terrific drama. I knew before watching that the teacher was not as she seemed, so that made it easier for me to watch and enjoy the series. | | 2. | Signo
Wow! First i thought it would be a normal serie, nothing special, but after watching the end and the specials, the hole story seems so incredible (surprising end)! Also the art of acting from everybody is really good. Yeah, i think there is something to learn out of this story and characters ;)...
