It's fall 2004. Kenji Aoki, manager of the Project Department of a major sporting goods manufacturer is in a ski resort in New Zealand. He has just finished helping out in a skiing event sponsored by his company, and finally has time to ski with his subordinate, Tappei Hayama. Just when Kenji is enjoying relief from work, he receives a call from Goro Shintani. "My car got stuck in the snow. Help me out."
Goro is Kenji's friend from college, but is now a board member of Kenji's company. Despite the fact that Goro is only 36-years old, he was promoted to his current position with the help of his father, the president of the company. As long as Goro is boss, Kenji can't refuse his orders. When Kenji arrives at the site, he discovers Goro with a beautiful and well-mannered girl. She is Yuki Aoi, Goro's secretary.
A few days after the skiing incident, Kenji sees a moving truck in front of his apartment. Somebody has moved into the vacant room right next to Kenji's. The two rooms were originally one room, but had been divided into two separate small rooms at some time in the past. Now only a wall and a sealed door separated the two rooms.
While observing the moving process, Kenji hears his new female neighbor using extremely vulgar language. She also has a terrible attitude. While still in shock at how boorish girls can be, Kenji picks up a photograph that has fallen from the girl's luggage. It's a picture of a female motorcycle gang—posing with their long hair bleached blond, dressed in flamboyant costumes, and wielding piercing looks.
"Oh boy, look at my new neighbor" thinks Kenji. He glances at the lady working downstairs and is taken back to see Yuki, the well-mannered girl he met at the ski resort. She's a Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde.
Since this day on, Kenji is amazed and disgusted at Yuki's way of life. There's a constant flow of different guys visiting Yuki's room. Knowing both of Yuki's polar personalities, Kenji is speechless at how well Yuki manages to balance her two extreme characters.
One day, Goro visits Kenji's apartment. Just when they're enjoying a chat about the good old days, there is a knock on Kenji's door. It's Yuki, and she's very drunk. Without opening the door, Kenji asks what she wants. Yuki says she dropped her keys and can't get inside. She wants to use the door between Kenji's room somehow to get in. Sensing that Goro has feelings for Yuki, Kenji manages to get Goro to leave from a different exit and lets Yuki inside. | | Fuji TV |

Kenji and Yuki is THE BEST COUPLE!!! Really cute couple!!!! I love the way they bicker with each other!! haha....Akiko Yada is cute! I really like Yuki's character! and I looove Yada's drunk acting, sooo funny and kawaii!!^.^ I just love their love story!!! I loooove all the western 80s soundtrack too! sugoi! Last Christmas by WHAM ga daisukiiiii!!! haha...but i dislike Oda Yuuji's version x) i keep wondering why didnt they just use the original song....heehee, Oda may be a great actor...but not a good singer x)
oh, but i have to say, that the love sub-plots are all CRAPS!!! Nana Katase and Tamaki Hiroshi are soooo annoying and boring! Their characters AND story are just crap. While the love triangle story between Goro, the sexy girl and the boy....althou uninteresting, but i like their funny characters^^ oh, but I do like the husband and wife quarrel, between Kenji's first girlfren and her husband...hehee, funny! and they made up thru the radio, very romantic!!^^ their dog is sooooo cute!
But, really....this drama is really just about Kenji and Yuki, for me....^_^ Great couple! i love the scene where Kenji and Yuki did the Titanic-pose!! haha!^^

I love this drama purely because it appeals to every nature of my being. Not only are the actors incredibly talented, but we have a plot that revolves around a Christmas Theme.
This isn't just another story about a girl getting sick and finding comfort in a surprise lover. It's about creating a dream and fighting to keep that dream alive.
There isn't one thing I would change about this show. The end scene with all the various couples was a bit corny, but it was so corny that I thought it completely appropriate.
Oda Yuji and Yada Akiko have such brilliant chemistry that it's impossible not to love them both by the end of this show. All the supporting characters were grand, and I must single out Ihara Tsuyoshi. This guy was SO funny! He was the perfect comic relief.

It's sweet, light-hearted. Taste like coffee with plenty of milk and sugar. It's sweet and smooth, but you probably don't want to have a second cup. (added: well, I watched it again last night.)
Again, the ending could be better (or bitterer).
I watched the ones with English subtitles, so probably didn't catch all the dialogue that relates to japanese culture and background.
it's christmas 2005. happy holiday (added: this morning I rushed into Walgreen to get a toothpaste. The theme song "Last Christmas" was playing in the store. Despite the age difference between Oda and Yada, the two seems to be able to work very fine together. You could definitely feel the chemistry between them.
The sub characters also worked hard in bringing the characters within their characters to life in this heart-warming drama.
One special note is the very good use of color contrasts and other filming techniques. I feel that the film makers deberately chose to decorate its settings in a very colorful way so to illuminate the atmosphere of the holiday seasons even further. A very good job on that department, since it's something that we don't normally see in Japanese dorama.

I wonder if Yuji Oda is feeling his age? Akiko was only 10 years old when he did Tokyo Love Story in the early 90's. Anyway, this is a bit of an updated version of that classic. Instead of Kanji/Kanchi we now have Kenji. He still works at Heart Sports, though, this time dealing more with ski equipment instead of tennis rackets and sneakers. :)
Very slick production. Solid cast. Story flows nicely. Even the Wham! song remakes are more than tolerable, LOL. Good for laughs, tears and everything in between. Finally, there's another pair of couple that is on the Jap drama scene, it's been quite a while. It was always Takuya Kimura with another actress, but I fully agree, there's some real chemistry between Akiko and Youji in this drama. It's funny, and the way they meet is so cute and different!!! Not a simple boy meets girl....you will see what I mean.....Anyways this had been one of the most enjoyable jap drama I had watched in years, and really Hiroshi is so damn cute!!! I think i'm a bit biased for liking this show since I didn't see tokyo love story before, I do enjoy christmas, and I'm a horrid Yada Akiko Fanboy ever since I saw yamato nadeshiko. But yeah... anyway the worst part of this show is probably the horrible Engrish in the opening song (Why lord why!?!?!). It's a cliche story line (with a bit of a twist ^^) but the 2 main leads pulled it off real well. Oda Yuji was really great in his role! Although I watch this drama after Christmas, I feel that I am still very engrossed with it. I like the character of Oda Yuji in the drama�c wow�c he is such a nice man in it�c. Gentle & caring for his girlfriend�c I m so touched by his affection for his loved ones�c heard that this is the 2nd love drama he shot after Tokyo Love Story�c despite so many years of acting he is still the prince of all heart�c actually I haven seen any of his drama or movie before & this is the 1st time I seen one of it�c. Fun show.. although it gets a little cookie cutter at times, employing all the jdrama stereotypes/cliches you can muster.
Oda Yuji is the classic ne'er do wrong - always compromises his own needs to help others, etc. The drama falls into the classic episodic 'new problem - frustration - solution - resolution - new problem arises' cycle for most of the series. The ending's a little cheesy and again, abusive: they spend a lot of effort trying to mislead you.
All in all, fun to watch. Not great, but certainly not bad. Aoi's a darling, if a pain. I love the childhood friend, Sally (Ryo) - she's awesome. And the chick who hooks up with Tamaki Hiroshi's character is really really pretty.

This dorama is overflowing so much positivism and joy. Impossible not to watching it without smiling and feeling better, looking forward to the next episode to keep smiling. I like the role of the supporting cast, special mention to Tsuyoshi Ihara and Ryo, it could have been more different w/o them. At last I saw Yada Akiko in a big show like this, the only one I watched was My Little Chef, an extraordinary dorama but quite different than a romantic story like this one. The weak point is the music, ok I like the American 80's, but this too much for me, sometimes is unbearable!, I'm beginnig to hate Last Christmas song. This was a great drama with an outstanding cast. I really enjoyed Yada Akiko and Oda Yuji's performance. They had great chemistry with one another and the dialogue between was both witty and cute. The other characters also faired pretty well although some of them were a little bit annoying at times and their problems just seemed to pop out from nowhere (not the man who played the boss though, I thought he was hilarious even when he made some pretty crude comments). Pretty much just a funny, cute, heart-warming romantic comedy that had a typical "happily-ever-after" ending. A very nice story with a high feel good factor. Ex hardass biker girl Aoi Yuri moves in next to Haruki Kenji's apartment, causing him a lot of grief thorugh the the joint door that both apartments share. Yuri has a soft side her however, and Kenji falls in love with her gradually. This drama is kept moving at a fast pace, which is great but sometimes too fast for it's own good as the ending felt a bit rushed. Props to Akiko Yada for looking absolutely smashing in this drama. Good dorama but i just couldn�Lt get into it, the characters are boring and sometimes the interaction between them is obnoxious, i can�Lt swallow that two people dating still sleep in separated rooms, specially when their rooms are just across the hall.
The only characters i really cared about were Tappei(Moriyama Mirai) and Ritsuko(Katase Nana), but their screen time was really small, i loved the last scene between them at the restaurant with everyone claping.

One of the best love doramas. Watching this dorama reminds me of Beautiful Life. Both lead actress have some kind of serious illness but unlike beautiful life, this dorama ends with a happy ending.
The 1st few episodes are quite interesting and addictive and will makes you keep watching further. Nice story flows and somehow you will have the kind of holiday mood whenever you watch it.
Guess it is because of the X'mas theme song and the 80s music that makes the show interesting and memorable. If you are the 80s fan, you will definitely like this dorama.

Oda Yuji makes a come back in a romance drama after his first many years ago in, "Tokyo Love Story." By the same guy who wrote the first, at that. There are some strange moments when Oda's character, Haruki, says the EXACT same lines to the love interest in Last Christmas from Tokyo Love Story. Also, Tokyo Love Story's idea is that he falls for the bright, spunky love right before his eyes--after a long, long time. Same with Last Christmas. If you liked Tokyo Love Story--try it set in 2004! I would say it was overall entertaining, but I guess I didn't love the chemistry too much. I think Yada Akiko was unable to give an up to par performance or presence as Oda Yuji had in the drama. Oda, though not entirely cute and lovable, just has a kind of warmth and humility around him that just shines through. The story was kind of weak as well, but I guess Yada Akiko's performance had a lot to do with how luckluster it felt since the main climax revolved around her character. Watched this because it was shown on Channel U with English subs. Thank God!!! Like Saiyuki, watched for the sake of watching for my weekly dose of Jdrama.
The plot is actually quite okay. Was curious to know what happens next. But i guess just like the other love themed stories, it didn't appeal that much to me. Something was missing. But the drama gave me a nice happy feel, though.

JUUUUUUST BRILLIANT! this dorama is brilliant from start to finish with all the casts giving a solid performances, hence my ratings! Oda Yuji and Yada Akiko the 2 main characters who end up falling in love after they become neighbours, are fantastic in their convincing fantastic acting. Especially for a guy, Yada Akiki`s character Yuki is soo sweet even though she tries putting on a brave face all the time that u just wanna cuddle her! Well, pretty average. Good actors with average cuteness acting in an average story. Only Ryo convinces completely. I think the storyline is pretty much stripped down to the love relationships, nothing besides it. For me, too many couples (nearly EVERY main character forms a couple with another), way too much "coincidents", a bit too much kitsch, what results from the christmas setting, I think.

Although I didn't like the actors I really enjoyed this drama, that shows the storyline and characters were great. I love the ending, nice ending...it wasn't really predictable...just fifty fifty..hehe~
I loved the romance scenes, that was the big difference between other dramas, mostly other dramas just let the couple get together without deeply showing problems withing the couple or how they concern each other. Deja vu of Tokyo Love Story all the way hahaha. But its good acting all round and Oda Yuji has made the role of the sensible, reliable but sensitive man, his. Though their age difference is quite obvious, the chemistry he strikes with Yada Akiko is quite believable. I found the tempo of the drama a bit slow at times, and the subplots were alright, not fantastic. Overall, a very decent drama worth watching, esp. for those fans of love dramas. I never finished this drama. I got super close though. I had maybe 1 or 2 episodes left. It's kinda cute. The thing that bothered me a lot though was the main character was supposed to be an ex-motorbike gang member.. and she was in NO WAY intimidating. It's wayyyy obvious that she's just some cute girl. Dec 2004: A really nice drama that suites the mood of christmas. Storyline maybe abit simple and predictable, but with a great cast, humour, nice setting, turned out to be the best this season. All around a great show with a great cast, poignant moments, and a barrel of laughs to boot. The off-handed meeting of the main characters was quirky and unique and the story progressed smoothly with a few subplots to keep you interested in the entire cast of characters not just the protagonist. Love this one. First, I thought, �gOoo�c Someone will die in these series�h when Kenji say that I am not alone and hold the box. I just want to stop it right away. I am so glad that I didn�ft stop watching it. These series makes me laugh in every episode and I enjoy the relationship between the cast.

This drama has a nice rhythm to it. The music and theme songs go well with the mood. Also, Yada Akiko is really cute. It does get cheesey sometimes. It is faintly like a sequel to tokyo love story.

I liked the main girl too, but I thought the main guy was kinda too old for her. But he's nice and all, so I guess that's okay. It's not great, the is a little stiffness and lack of chemistry between Oda Yuji and the main actress. However, it's not bad either. Once the drama went along there was less stiffness on Oda's part, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. One of the most beautiful dramas I have ever seen in my life. The music and theme goes so well together. Oda Yuji is at the top of his game as always and Yada Akiko brings a break out performance in this one. No, this isn't just another corny Christmas drama, it's the real deal. Can be watched and enjoyed anytime ;) |
