Synopsis |
---|
After making a serious mistake in his work in Tokyo, talented surgeon Goto Kensuke is invited to take charge of the only clinic on the small island of Yonaguni, Okinawa. It is difficult to get competent doctors to serve on this remote island, and the islanders are now used to traveling for hours via boat for proper medical care. Despite seeming weak and unreliable (he gets very seasick, and does not have a driving license), Dr. Goto wins over the skeptical islanders with his skill and dedication. Some children of the island make a flag for his clinic, but get his name wrong. Thereafter he is known by all as Koto. | Fuji TV |

| 1. | Perfect for the Optimists [Rating: 10/10] I now consider this the best drama I've seen ever! No matter how many times I see it, I always get teary-eyed and touched by the good-naturedness of the characters. Call me old-fashioned but I find nothing wrong with this kind of worldview. Though, I doubt if anyone's as noble as Dr. Koto (he's just too kind and pure!)
As for the actors, I just love Yoshioka Hidetaka! He's amazing! I discovered this drama while looking for Sakai Masato dramas (only to find out later that he only showed up in the 2nd season). But with just the first ep. of Dr. Koto, i fell in love with him (Dr. Koto) in an instant! Some actors were just as convincing like Izumiya Shigeru (Shige), Sengoku Noriko (Uchi), and of course, Kakei Toshio (Wada). Even Tomioka Ryo (Takehiro) did amazingly well!
And who can forget about the OST! It's just perfect. I love the instrumental versions of Gin no Ryuu no Sei ni Notte and Omoide Dake dewa Tsura Sugiru. One of the best drama OSTs I've heard.
This drama isn't getting that much attention b/c the actors here are not the usual "idols", except maybe for Shibasaki Kou. And the story isn't the usual "love story" either. But I'm glad it was well received in Japan. | Reviewed by moeru_h on 3 September 2008 | 2. | n@@@III [Rating: 10/10] h was recommended this drama and what a surprise it turned out to be. This was one of the highest rated dramas of 2003, and there's plenty of reason to support that. It's a touching drama about a doctor and the people on the island. It really touches on the subject of human nature, friendship, bonds, and trust.@@`@@h thought it was going to be a slow and dull drama, but after watching the first 10 minutes of it, I totally got into the whole set up of things. The characters are so powerful and the music is great. I love watching dramas that you can really get yourself into, and this is definitely one of those.

The story was quite normal: a doctor makes a mistake (which wasn't his fault at all), and as a result he runs to a remote island to "start" over. On the island he has to win over the hearts of the locals by doing a surgery every episode through which he manages to save every secondary character.
The plot was a bit fantastical. Most of the surgeries would have been impossible to do given the circumstances, and things went just a little too perfectly. Some events could have been heartwarming, but the incredulous quality of the event took away from the emotions.
The reason I'm giving this drama a rating of 7 is because I love the ending Theme Song, and also because I was completely captivated by Yoshioka Hidetaka. I've watched him in Kita no Kuni Kura, where he was just a boy of ten, and without knowing he was the one playing Dr. Koto, I recognized him right away. I also love Shibasaki Kou, which may also explain my rating, but also because the drama wasn't BAD, just not great. | Reviewed by Wynter on 6 July 2009 | 4. | Great drama on dedication and compassion... [Rating: 10/10] I thought this was an excellent drama indeed. Not many mainstream stars in this show except Shibasaki Kou but there many pretty ladies anyway :P
This drama tells the tale of Dr Koto coming to an island to work only to find that the entire community doesn't trust him. He slowly but surely wins them over through his dedication and sincerity to the medical profession, as well as his affiable character which allows to relate to the people with ease. This has really nice drama theme based on compassion for others and understanding the true meaning of being a doctor. A light hearted drama overall, but gets a bit serious toward the end.
The theme song for this drama is also excellent. It really got me hooked onto it... Highly recommended!~~ | Reviewed by DragonSpirit164 on 9 August 2004 | 5. | ALLRIGHT, could have been very godd [Rating: 6/10] I like the way the set the doctor up on the isolated island having to help people that really didn't trust modern medicine. They had some very good plots for the different episodes, like when the kid got sick and the doctor had to do the surgery. But, the young guy that played the doctor was pretty pathetic. His reaction to every obstacle was to almost threw up. His character in real life would never get a patient anywhere on earth. I would rather do the surgery on myself and take my chances. The nurses in the show had more balls than this guy | Reviewed by warren.mcclendon on 20 October 2003 | 6. | Nice Drama [Rating: 8/10] Dr. Koto is a kind hearted doctor who's goodness supercedes his ambitions. In a day and age when most of the young adults move on to the city or larger towns, small village doctors are needed especially in remote islands. The main character is a well known actor famous from Kita no Kuni Kara and he looks the same. Definitely not a drama for those seeking trendy love dramas since this is for an older crowd who likes stories about family and old folks. | Reviewed by moku999 on 11 November 2003 | 7. | One of my favourites... [Rating: 10/10] I really don't get how this drama got worse ratings than a ten! :3
I'm in love with this drama - I only watched it at first because Kakei Toshiro and Tokita Saburo (two of my favourite actors) were in it, but I fell in love with the simple(?) storyline and the setting... | Reviewed by vash_donutangel on 26 February 2004 | 8. | a little too exaggerating [Rating: 8/10] it's overall not too bad, at least something different, a clinic doctor, not a uni prof or something like tat which we commonly see in other medical-drama. | Reviewed by juliana_phang on 27 December 2004 |

But Dr Koto - Shinryousho is wonderful... Its so touching!!! Heart warming!!! The plot and the casting r perfect... BtW.. i've seen that some ppl didnt like the main char. IMO he was the best... the writter really come with something different when they created the Koto's Char....
Nways... from making someone who trully hates medical shows to love a medical dorama.... Dr Koto has to get a perfect score. | 2. | Comments by masnita [Rating: 8/10] Just finished watching this drama recently...thought it would be just like any other doctor dramas I've watched before..but I was wrong...first..the scenery are really beautiful..the actors and actresses are all really talented (especially those playing parts of the villagers) and the kids are soo talented too...a very nice drama indeed. Must watched for those who like dramas about human relationship and compassion. | 3. | Comments by Susan [Rating: 10/10] Dr. Koto's clinic is definitely one of the best series of all time. It impresses not only in the accuracy and realism of surgical procedures, but also in it's heart-warming stories. From the very beginning it was clear that there would a lot of smiles and a lot of tears. The entire case was amazing and the staff did a fantastic job. I look forward to being able to see the special and second series in the near future. | 4. | Comments by yume [Rating: 4/10] It's too slow. There's just something about it that doesn't make me care about any of the characters. The doctor's character is so soft that I wanted to slap him around sometimes and say PULL IT TOGETHER, MAN! The only lively thing in the show was the old woman and the pissed off nurse. Other than that, the story doesn't stand out as an original accomplishment. | 5. | Comments by DragonSpirit164 [Rating: 10/10] I thought this was an excellent drama indeed. The characters are very realistic and I really love the actors. Most of them I'd never even heard of. Yoshioka did a fantastic job as Dr. Koto!!! And holy whoa I love Tokito's Hara!! It's a very sweet drama and you'll need a box of tissues for sure. Looking forward to watching season 2 ;D | 7. | Comments by warren.mcclendon [Rating: 6/10] Very good location The nurses are good. The Doctor is a joke. It is ruined by the main character. They use someone who is not as manly as Madonna and try make you believe he can do surgery and go out do manual labor with people who really look like they have been doing it their whole lives. | 8. | Comments by SushiMaki [Rating: 6/10] I love watching foreign films especially when the story line is in the rural areas. I thought Hidetaka is too young to be a doctor, and I did not know he was a child actor (Kita no Kuni). And why does Kou like roles like this, grumpy and strange? How about a comedy for her? | 9. | Comments by atheon [Rating: 8/10] Dec 2003: Beautiful drama with great scenery, quite simple drama, about a doctor in a small island which located far away from the main island. Shibasaki kou did a great job as a nurse, and hidetaka won best actor for this. Don't watch it if you love romance story. | 10. | Comments by paul_muaddib [Rating: 9/10] Good, heartwarming drama.
Dont buy in too much about the negative reviews on this; people tend to have pre-conceptions on medical drama and expect them to behave as in Chicago Hope, ER, House MD, Grey's or any of the US-based med shows. | 11. | Comments by compaqmac321 [Rating: 9/10] its good, the mystery that lays behind koto's real reason for being there is interesting i wanna know why he is really there...im annoyed by shibasaki kou's character, i hate tsundere's period...other than that, i guess its pretty good | 12. | Comments by oldasianguy [Rating: 10/10] Great Show!!!! Really sensitive show depicting the plight of a young gentle docter assigned to a clinic on a remote island......The cast headed by Yoshioka Hidetaka as the young dr were great....I highly recommend this drama!!!! | 13. | Comments by Nightcall411 [Rating: 5/10] Well Im still watching it but its not that bad I just got into Japanese Drama and so I like it its not that bad. Touching and although alot of the people says that the doctor is not manly enough and the nurse has much more courage, but I think that is a good doctor! Everyone should watch it! Highly recommended. | 15. | Comments by jdfan [Rating: 8/10] Highest viewership of the season. Dr Koto is an entertaining dorama with a mixture of funny and moving moments. I wish they had developed the relationship a little bit more between the two leads. Worth watching | 16. | Comments by onigiriman [Rating: 7/10] So-so. I didn't see the first one, but I did watch the 2006 version. Someone should tell Yoshioka to cut his hair. He should have graduated from Kita no kuni kara by now. | 17. | Comments by shyper [Rating: 8/10] Good drama and beautiful scenes. Make you feel like visiting the island too. I like Dr. Coto-san, Kou Shibasaki-san and Yuriko Ishida-san acting very much. | 18. | Comments by Wynter [Rating: 7/10] This drama was very average with a blueprint storyline. However, I loved watching Yoshioka Hidetake on screen, and of course, Shibasaki Kou was fabulous. | 19. | Comments by Lady Zhuge [Rating: 7/10] I was bored by the first couple of episodes, but then the drama grew on me thereafter 'til about the last two episodes.
