| The 36th NHK Taiga drama chronicles the life of Mori Motonari, a warlord of the early 1500s who stood at the vanguard of the Warring States era. All Japanese school textbooks contain the Mitsuya no kyokun, Mori's famous lesson to his three sons that teaches that while one arrow is easily broken, three arrows together cannot be broken. In 1997, 500 years after his birth, NHK dramatizes Motonari's rise from a chief of the region of Aki (now Hiroshima) to a daimyo who rules over ten provinces of the Chugoku region. Motonari was 64 years old and already the patriarch of a powerful dynasty about the time Oda Nobunaga and Takeda Shingen appeared on the scene. And even after his death, the Mori family figured prominently in Japanese history. His grandson Terumoto became a loyal Toyotomi vassal. Defeated at the Battle of Sekigahara, Ieyasu confiscated most of his lands, leaving him only with Suwo and Nagato, later known as Choshu. But 260 years later, the Mori got their ultimate revenge, leading the imperial forces against the Tokugawa in the Meiji Restoration. | | KIKU TV |

The first Taiga drama I watched. Gosh, it was so long ago. I still fondly remember enjoying my Saturday evenings following this dramatic, wonderful year-long series. I wished I had record it then. Oh well....the search for the Mori Motonari DVD collection continues...
The story of the Mori clan in Western Honshu. At that time, there were a number of super clans in Japan during the Sengoku period. Like China's Warring States period. The clans were the Mori, the Satsuma, Oda, Takeda, Imagawa, Hojo and the Uesugi. All vying to march into Kyoto and to establish their own Shogunate. This story tells of the rise of the Mori clan under the patriarch of Motonari. Near his death, you see the mentioning of an upstart by the name of Oda Nobunaga in middle Japan. So, in a sense, this is the precursor to Toshiie to Matsu. Which has a little bit on Motonari's grandson, Terumoto, who took over the clan.

This was made before NHK decided they had to have a "star" as lead in their taigas. Here it's played by Hashinosuke Nakamura a well known kabuki actor who's only had a handful of television and movie appearances. He is great. Alongside is an excellent supporting cast that all give solid performances.
This is one of the few taigas that I didn't have to bounce back and forth when different characters appeared and say, "Who's this guy again?" I attribute that to the excellent script written by Makiko Uchidate. All the characters are distinct and the story is told in a way that made it easy to follow.
