1. | Comments by Susan [Rating: 10/10] A truly impeccable series, and certainly one of the best I watched in 2010. Matsuyuki Yasuko was lovely and soft-spoken, but timed her outbursts well. The little girl playing her daughter was utterly adorable. Actually, I was surprised by the series. However, pleasantly so. I expected it to follow the somewhat crazed relationship between a kidnapper and her kidnapping victim, with them experiencing some kind of mutual stockholm syndrome (which, in truth, they did), but it ended up being about the relationship between a mother and her child on so many different levels. In fact, there were a multitude of mothers portrayed in the series, and I loved the generational aspect and how each of their mother-daughter relationships complimented and contrasted each other. In the end I was moved to tears. No matter how unbelievable it might seem, they truly became mother and daughter. |
2. | Comments by occultangle [Rating: 9/10] I had some issues with the pacing; I think they should have spent more time wandering around at the beginning before they end up at the mother's house in Tokyo, and the flashback episode about Rena's real mother was horrible; the entire episode should have been cut. Also the melodrama increases as the show progresses which is disappointing but to be expected from J-drama, thankfully it never goes overboard enough to ruin it. But regardless of any flaws it's an extremely emotionally moving drama, enough so that I more than once found myself experiencing a distinct teary-eyed sensation, something that pretty much never happens to me. It's really not quite "the greatest drama ever" that a lot of people are making it out to be, and I think it will largely be forgotten in time, but it is definitely a must see. |
3. | Comments by orange1806 [Rating: 10/10] Thought provoking and very touching. The theme on "mother-daughter" relationship was brought out really well, though I actually wouldnt mind if the series had explored each mother-daughter relationship even deeper. The cast was superbly outstanding. Been a fan of Matsuyuki Yasuko since Kyumei Byotou 2. She's got style, and did really well in this drama. Cant believe the little actress is only 5! She's amazing at her age. Tanaka Yuko portrayed the role really well too. The ending was a little sad for me, but I guess it's probably the most befitting ending to the show.. |
4. | Comments by EstherM [Rating: 9/10] Mother is the only drama ever that made me shed a tear or two. It's a proper drama carried by a series of strong female characters ranging from the 5 year old child actress to the seasoned mother figures. It tackles a broad range of serious traumas (what a chilly first episode). I admit, emotional buttons are pushed shamelessly but the characters have dignity and strength, it's easily forgiven. |
5. | Comments by dokaben [Rating: 7/10] I watched this after "Soredemo, Ikite Yuku" because it was by the same writer. Decent, but not as strong or smooth. From the first episode on I couldn't help but think, "This isn't going to end well." Excellent acting, intriguing plot, some deep thoughts on the sacrifice of mothers, but it just didn't grab me. It also seemed to rely on many unbelievable coincidences. |
6. | Comments by snow_san [Rating: 8/10] Good cast, strong performance by all. Well written - touching moments throughout, annoyances few and far between. There's several stories - much of the cast with their own personal issues - adds to the interest. It is slow paced so make it relaxed viewing. |
7. | Comments by temmahkrik [Rating: 10/10] The best drama I've ever seen, hands-down. The acting is incredible, the story is paced perfectly, and the little girl could give lessons to any number of older actresses on technique; she is a natural. This series has the biggest heart. Prepare to sob. |
8. | Comments by strawberryfzz [Rating: 9/10] Kudos to Matsuyuki Yasuko and the little actress playing Rena (I can't believe she's only 5 years old D:). Every episode made me teary-eyed at least once. The ending seemed fair and appropriate. |
9. | Comments by AnnicaR [Rating: 8/10] Ashida Mana was a very good actress, and she did such a good job with the character :D The storyline was beautiful! strongly recomended! |
10. | Comments by Sun_Shang_Xiang [Rating: 10/10] Okay, a lot of the characters make bad/irrational decisions but this is a really touching drama. The entire female cast was excellent. |
11. | Comments by Bbbut [Rating: 5/10] average - At first it is authentic and down-to-earth but sadly it becomes more melodramatic with every episode. |
12. | Comments by Spider [Rating: 9/10] Very strong performances and no over acting in this Drama! Feels more like a long movie at times than a drama. |
13. | Comments by v1olet [Rating: 10/10] A must watched drama, one of the best drama. Ashida Mana was superb at a very young age. |
14. | Comments by shinjitsu [Rating: 7/10] I'd give it 7.5 if I could. Character based drama may be too slow for some |
