Great HeartWarming drama that will make you laugh and cry about a Dr. Jin brain surgeon who slips back in time to 17th century Edo near the end of the Tokugawa era!
The story about a brain surgeon named, Jin Minakata, who has spent the last two years in deep guilt, after a failed brain surgery he performed on his fiance' who lies in a coma .
One day, he chases a man to the roof of the hospital but falls but awakens to find himself transported back in time to the Edo period. He is soon attacked by a samurai, but he escapes with the help of a samurai named Kyotaro. But Kyotaro suffers a serious head injury while trying to protect him, but Jin manages to save his life despite a lack of proper medical equipment using his modern medical knowledge ala MacGyver making do with whatever is lying around.
Meanwhile, Kyotaro's sister, Saki begins to fall for Jin after becoming his surgical nurse. all the while, Jin's is trying desperately to find his way back to his fiance' in the present and to stay alive in EDO where life is cheap where samurai are allowed to attack just for disrespect / failing to bow during great political upheaval without modern medical equipment and simple drugs. | | Reviewed by asugar2 on 24 December 2012 | | 2. | "A" for effort [Rating: 8/10]
What happens when a modern-day brain surgeon is thrown back over a century into a critical period in Japanese history? Adopted from the popular manga, JIN combines political intrigue with a speculative fiction plot, with a set of top notch performances as support. Haruka Ayase is charming, but Osawa Takao and Miki Nakatani provide real drama to the proceedings.
Of course, the plot may not be completely credible, especially with the paradoxes of time travel; but everyone is so engaging that it's easy to ignore the gaping plot flaws. This period drama features top stars in a well-done serial that never loses track of the difficulties of the Edo period.

unique idea, to bring modern medical type of dorama into edo (17th century time) setting. but, yet it doesn't only focus on the medical side, there was a very strong "drama of human relation" in this film.. (I can't express it very well in english)
there was also a bit of political (edo's era type) side.
So my conclusion are :
I feel very excited when I watching this drama, it's strongly draws my emotianal, when the scene is happy I fell very happy, when it's supposed to be sad I was very touched... I've always been a fan of movies and dramas that involve time travel. Something about going back to the past or into the future to try and change your fate for the better is so appealing, so I was instantly drawn to this drama. The cast and the acting and production values seem higher in this drama than ones I've seen in the past. From the 1st episode you're drawn in and want to see the next episode... that's pretty much my basic criteria with JDorama's - they have to make you want to watch the next episode badly.... this one will make you feel this way! Though at times it seems a bit absurd and out there it really is a wonderful drama on so many levels. The cast is terrific. A lot of familiar faces are present in this drama. The drama takes place both in the Edo period and present and deals with Medicine, Time and Space theory, Love, Friendship, Politics and more. I do not care for medicine based Dr. drama's but this is different. I found it difficult to get into this drama right away, because the science fiction was not convincing in the least. Over time, slowly, the characters started to win me over and by the end I was enjoying the whole JIN experience. I didn't mind the ridiculous operations and invention of Penicillin and rubber, since the characters were so thoroughly convincing ain each of their roles. I had a strong intention to dislike this drama going in. I had heard so much raving about it, and it all went something like this; "OMG it's about a doctor... WHO GOES BACK IN TIME!!! AWESOME!!!." I wondered at times if I weren't the only sane person in the world who realized that this idea was cheesy as hell. So I watched specifically with the intention of laughing at it, I wanted to come on here and say; "OMG this would have been so much better if it was about a veterinarian...who went back in time!!! AND SAVED THE DINOSAURS!!! The climax would have him MacGyvering some rocks and sticks together to stop the impending meteor!!!."
But the problem is that this show pretty much is as good as everybody was saying. The idea really is cheesy, but as a history lover, something about viewing history through the eyes of someone who has the same point of view that you would have brings it to life, and makes it feel personal, and in a silly way actually more believable than a typical period piece with actors coldly portraying strange behavior that you can't relate to.
It actually got me as soon as I saw the opening credits, where they juxtaposed historical photographs of Japan with what it looks like now, while playing beautiful traditional Japanese sounding music played by a large modern orchestra. The story begins quite excitingly, with all the time travel thing and the main character adaptation to the Edo era where he has been sent. The story afterwards moves between a love story and a medical dorama, with an interesting point of view about "what to do with the XXI century knowledge at the end of the Edo period", feeling a bit like a God. I liked more the historical and cultural details (the cholera, the "Red District" and prostitute's life, and son on) rather than the love story, but unfortunately by the end of the show everything just focused on the love story. About the medical details, the way they are accepted is so unbelievable and exciting at the same time. I knew the second season was being aired in Japan by the time I was watching it so I didn't expect the time travel thing to be explained, although I was expecting a little hint or something. Overall this dorama reminded me to "Doomsday Book" written by Connie Willis, and to "Glass Rose" (PS2 videogame). I also like stories about how everything would have been if things had happened differently in the past (just like in "Years of rice and salt" by Kim Stanley Robinson). I must say Nakatani Miki did a wonderful job as Nokaze and Miki; I was totally impressed with her work. Watched ep1-9 and it has been very entertaining and memorable. About a brainsurgeon who find himself back in the edo period. Watch the operations he carried out in the edo period with expertise of the future. Some historical figure made an appearance, such as the famous Sakamoto Ryoma portayed very uniquely and originally by Uchino Masaki. Am quite surprise that Osawa Takao make it back to the dorama industry. Ayase Haruka did surprisingly good. Though Koide Keisuke didn't really left an impression. Once an episode ends, there's this impatient urge for more.
finished watching. I initially gave this 9, but now it's 8. Ending is very important as it'll seal the drama (though there'll probably be a second season who knows and since the original manga is yet to be completed) and be a determinant of how you'd feel about a drama. The open end didn't bother me a bit maybe because I'm aware of the yet to be concluded manga it is based on. But the slow last episode does bother me since the earlier ones had been a great watch. It fails my expectation.
that said, overall it is a nice and good drama, and arguably one of the best and most interesting concept of the season (though my fav of this season is obviously a drama sequel; liar game 2)

This drama came out of nowhere for me. I never planned on watching it and I had low expectations when I started it. But from episode 1 I was hooked! Mostly it was due to Osawa Takao as Minakata Jin. He has this ability to make you feel like he's your best friend, and so I really cared about what was going to happen to Jin and the people around him. Uchino Masaaki as Sakamoto Ryoma, however, came out from behind as my favorite character overall. He was funny, energetic, silly, and tough, all rolled into one very expressive package. Of course, Ayase Haruka lives up to her reputation as one of Japan's most popular actresses right now. She was adorable and passionate and I truly rooted for her. Nakatani Miki was elegant throughout the entire series, even as the bright, cheery Tomonaga Miki in the future. A drama with an interesting premise and a plotline that generally keeps moving along. That's not to say that this drama doesn't have any slow moments; in fact, the conversations between Jin Sensei and Saki can sometimes be painfully slow. In addition, this drama can also lean towards melodramatic at times (way too much crying, anyone?). Still, the cast, particularly the leads and the older generation actors, was excellent, and the music definitely helped to put the audience in the mood of the drama. Surprisingly, I also liked the open ended ending, which, IMO, allows the audience to decide for themselves what happened in the end. Then, of course, I hear that there's going to be a sequel, which I am afraid may be the downfall of the drama ^^"' (I have never seen an excellent j-drama sequel ever. Almost a nine! It�Ls not that original though - it�Ls like Life on Mars - only doctors instead of cops and Edo instead of Manchester in 1973. Sometimes a bit too melodramatic for my taste, plus when somebody did something heroic (this drama assumes that people acted more noble in the past and would say stuff like "I would die in this fire to save Edo"), the dialogues were painfully corny. Most main characters were thankfully spared and were portrayed in nuanced way. It was also refreshing to see that the female characters in Edo were intelligent, strong and more independent (not physically free, but in their thinking) than in any average drama playing in the now. The Edo period wasn't only samurais and geishas. Thanks to this drama you will see with another eyes another Edo, quite far from the Chambara films and nearer to the Yoji Yamada movies.
All of this dorama is excellent, but the cast is really awesome, since Sekachuu I haven't watched a great performance of Haruka Ayase like in this one, and what can I say about Masaaki Uchino in the role of Sakamoto Ryoma?, it was an authentic revolution in Japan, it was like Ryoma spirit reborn around the country. About the background story of the doctor from the future is quite interesting as well. It's impossible not being so interested in every episode. I was really surprised with JIN, i never thought i could enjoy a medical dorama as much as i enjoyed this one.
The whole return to the past and using the 21st century medical knowledge on Edo was really awesome, how he cured cholera and teach Peninciln to the peolple of Edo, everything was really cool.
The acting was top notch, specially from the male cast: Osawa Takao(Jin) and Uchino Masaaki(Ryoma), they were really the stars of this dorama.
Nakatani Miki(Nokaze), Takeda Tetsuya(Ogata) and Hayase Haruka(Saki) were good too, but their characters had much less depth than Jin and Ryoma�Ls characters.

In all sincerity, I give this a 9.5... wanting to give it a 10 but just can't.
This drama proved out to be THE gem of this season. No one was expecting much out of it, yet it kept everyone watching it every week. I know it did for me and all my friends here.
A very good cast, a great story development, charming characters. Aside from that creepy baby in a jar, this was just truly a beautiful drama to watch. The soundtrack is also excellent.

"omoshiroi!" (INTERESTING in Japanese) That was my reaction when I watched this drama. Who would be able to think of an idea of a doctor in the 21st century and Edo period. I felt that the concept, the plot, and historical accuracy was all great throughout this drama. I highly recommend this. I just wish they would have explained everything (I heard a season 2 has been confirmed(!)). This is my favorite medical drama. The beginning is better, but it's still interesting throughout. It's about a doctor that time travels back to before modern medicine. Excellent series, amazing sets and cinematography. Ayase Haruka (who I had first seen in Hotaru no Hikari and later in Mr. Brain) puts in a great performance. She just gets better with every production. Osawa Takao is great as the time-lost doctor, and Uchino Masaaki is masterfully entertaining as the historical figure Sakamoto Ryoma.
