I just re-watched this after something like ten years, and though it's a good series (I wish they'd have done a couple more seasons,) it wasn't as good as I'd remembered.
The cases are all interesting, and since my first watch of "Galileo" and "Voice" I've been a big fan of stories in which seemingly inexplicable and mysterious events are shown after investigation to have rational explanations. The thing that detracts from Kiina is that the principle characters never get much depth of development, even though they're all interesting and memorable. IOW, the characters in Kiina deserved better treatment than the series' writers gave them.
Kiina's photographic memory and excellent reasoning skills make her an interesting character, but there was too little development of her personality beyond that, the same for her partner and her co-workers. I wanted to know more about what makes Kiina tick; about her partner Yamazaki; about the brooding Chief Miyabi (who looks exactly like Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi in this drama, especially when he wears his shades 8^); about their superior officer Mitarai. Sure, different episodes focus a little more on some of them - like the jovial lab tech (and Kiina's romantic interest) Shin'ichiro - but the writing doesn't really dig very deep into what motivates the characters or into their inner lives. It can be argued that that's difficult to do in just nine episodes, but as a simple comparison, consider the depth of character development in "Voice," "Jimi ni Sugoi," "Joker Yurusarezaru Sosakan," or "Tantei no Tantei."
Definitely worth watching - again, I really wish they had done a couple more seasons - but it's not quite as good as some of the other detective dramas out there. |

Too bad there are only 9 episodes and Koike Eiko's role is, alas, not a big one (though she looks lovely in that uniform!). Good performance by Kanno Miho, as almost always in her case, so no surprise there. p.s. The authors must be Meitantei Conan fans, LOL: Kiina's ex's name is..."Kudō Shin'ichi...rō"?!? Maji ka?!? ^_^; |
3. | Comments by Sleepingstar [Rating: 8/10] Kanno Miho was great for once again, but sometimes it seems illogical that Kiina fails to see some clues that imo she should notice. Cases were mostly pretty good, Tt wasn't traditional detective show where there is many suspects and then detective with his/her great mind comes up with conclusion who is criminal. It was more like stories about how Kiina with her great mind solves some strange cases (where there often doesn't seem to be real suspects at all first) that often end up being more normal than they may first seem. |
4. | Comments by ScrappedShinigami [Rating: 7/10] Grrrrr I can't watch the last ep but the rest of the series was pretty fun, I love the characters and the cases are always exciting as they start off seeming supernatural.
I enjoyed it but the only thing I dislike about these kind of dramas is that they don't have strong on going storylines. It's good if you wanna watch a detective show with a different investigaton every ep. I however like there to be an on going theme.
Good fun though ^^ |
5. | Comments by Oba-chan [Rating: 7/10] Nothing special, Only kanno miho show or i should say one "Wo"man show. The other like Yuta, eiko, muga, masao and everyone in the police departement (Except sawamura) are "Jama". They just can't support this drama well. The only think that makes me enjoy this drama is because they create it based on concrete fact.

6. | Comments by chibichan [Rating: 8/10] really interesting, the main reason i watched this because kanno Miho, i just love her in every dorama she played. In this dorama she become an extraordinary detective who have to deal with strange case, with her photographic memory and unusual way of thinking she and her partner can solve the mystery |
7. | Comments by aramia [Rating: ?/10] Watched it for kanno miho. not her best performance ( but i blamed the script)
interesting cases, but the direction and screenplay weren't fantastic. plus the super memory of kiina is kinda corny.
nonethess kiina=kanno miho <3<3<3 |
8. | Comments by EstherM [Rating: 6/10] Typical mystery with the usual slightly weird but gifted investigator. See also Control, Galieo, Iryu Sosa, Kagi no Kakatta Heya etc. Cases are made from facts - so they feel often familiar. |
9. | Comments by yeoni [Rating: 8/10] The storyline is engaging and the acting all round is great especially from Kanno Miho. It's quirky, funny but does have serious undertones. |
10. | Comments by temmahkrik [Rating: 7/10] Gets more than a little repetitive, but it's pretty decent. The main character--Kiina--is very sweet, awkward but likable. |
11. | Comments by Jackykero [Rating: 8/10] Another good comedy from Kanno Miho. If you like the usual style of comedy she does - which I do - you'll like this one. |
12. | Comments by marspeach [Rating: 7/10] The cases were hit or miss. Kanno Miho was pretty cute as Kiina and the cast had some good interactions together. |
13. | Comments by cirrus [Rating: 7/10] Not too bad a watch. A few of cases were fairly interesting. Not Miho's best work but she did a pretty good job. |
14. | Comments by aoiharu [Rating: ?/10] still watching... but i like kanno miho for her acting and versatility.
whodunnit dramas arae my kind (: |
