Synopsis |
---|
The concept for this drama is based on Japan's proposal for an emergency medical service using helicopters to quickly reach those in need. A special bill was passed in June 2007 that should foster widespread adoption of the system.
Yamashita stars as a young doctor-in-training, working under the guidance of an experienced "flight doctor" (Toshiro Yanagiba). Some scenes will be filmed with a real helicopter, adding to the show's tension. | Tokyograph |

| 1. | Lacking [Rating: 7/10] I had high hopes for this drama as a suspenseful medical drama, but it brought me back down to earth. There was little character development; if Yamapi's Aizawa Kousaku was meant to be the cool doctor, it became instead unexciting, unmemorable and downright boring. Shiraishi (Aragaki Yui) is an overemotional walking, talking medical encyclopaedia, but a slight change to become a braver and more determined person saves her character. As for the other 2 'leads', Hiyama and Fujikawa - what do they actually DO? This show instead belongs to the veteran flight doctors, especially Kuroda, who without him, the show will be an utter waste of time. Another saving grace would perhaps be the realistic medical scenes; sure beats Iryu! | Reviewed by Limes on 18 October 2008 | 2. | Entertaining & Modern [Rating: 7/10] I agree with most of what's been said above.
I relate it a bit to Iryu, for those who have seen this other medical dorama. Same team of various characters, same fast pace, same modern filming style.
I only give it a 7 since I was hoping for a little more of character development and a little less of surgery. I think there was room for a little more interaction between the 5 main characters, particularly on the size of Aizawa-sensei / Yamapi.
It was still a very enjoyable watch, with only good actors and a fast-pace that keeps you entertained to the end.
Don't miss the Special, which closes the season much better than the last and eleventh episode. | Reviewed by Jackykero on 14 April 2009 | 3. | Great Medical Drama. [Rating: 8/10] This is more like an 8.5. I'm usually not into medical shows but this one and season 2 had me hooked. Although it was a bit episodic and didn't do much in terms of story until the end, most of the medical cases were good with some being heart wrenching. All the characters and their development are really strong. The only issue I had with this drama was with the rather cheesy 2nd episode, not because of the bra man, but because one of the cases was really ridiculous with this lady asking her boyfriend to break her nose and then refusing treatment. Arrg get a grip!!! Other than that, I like both seasons of Code Blue. | Reviewed by mrsmith10 on 6 February 2011 | 4. | Surprisingly good ... [Rating: 9/10] If you are looking for the usual tear-jerkers, then this is not for you. Code Blue is a medical drama that showcases what a Japanese hospital has to offer. As always, 11 episodes is just too short to put more creative juices in the production but all in all this drama is quite amazing. Helicopters, hi tech hospital facilities, Code Blue was able to pull off an "e.r." type of drama. True that this may not be Yamapi's or Erika Toda's best performances but it's quite pivotal in the sense that they're not just teen idols anymore, they are now actors. Hoping to see more dorama of this kind. | Reviewed by katpira on 18 January 2009 | 5. | Dont give up on it too early [Rating: 6/10] It starts of slow and only picks up speed after episode 5. That's when the plot really gets going. Don't skim through the first few episodes though, there's some pretty important bits that define the characters. The final episode did leave a few sub-plots unfinished, but the Special took care of that just fine. After watching the first few operations you may end up skipping these scenes in the later episodes, but apart from that, it's not that bad a watch. | Reviewed by doublemask on 15 February 2009 | 6. | The other side of Yamapi [Rating: 9/10] Engine start....
Code Blue tells story about 4 intern doctor who aim to be the flight doctor. Only the best doctor can ride the Heli. In order to become a great doctor they must overcome every hurdle, but at the same time they learn about live.
Its refreshing for me to watch Yamapi in this kind of dorama. His role as cold blooded, strong minded doctor very different from his previous role. | Reviewed by chibichan on 22 September 2008 | 7. | Amusing [Rating: 7/10] Catchy stories, lots of highly unbelievable situations, an unusually attractive bunch of doctors, cool helicopters somehow still work in this drama. There is a strong supporting cast. The often trite stories are still well acted. The helicopter stuff is cool. No brain work needed to take this story in but it was fun. | Reviewed by Eve on 11 March 2009 | 8. | Good [Rating: 7/10] Episodes 1-7 are okay, really interesting for a medical drama but after episode 7 (8-finale) it's like Grey's Anatomy in Japanese language. They could have created a better or unusual emergency scenario. I enjoy the song of Mr. Children though :) | Reviewed by jugatsu15 on 20 March 2009 | 9. | Love the side stories of the patients! | 1. | Comments by ginger ale [Rating: 9/10] Code Blue Dr. Heli is Yanagiba Toshiro's drama all the way as he gave life to the cold, no emo, all work no play surgeon Kuroda sensei. I love this guy since I first watched him in Bayside Shakedown and the Grand Tribe, he is one awesome actor. His real life performance made the series not just another ER drama. Yamapi was terrific as the intern another cold surgeon in the making, gosh this guy is eye candy. Erika Toda and Aragaki Yuu were adorable as flight surgeons in training. Erika has matured a lot as an actress since Death lNote and Gakky gave credence to her role as a conflicted adult. But the young uns were just the icing on the cake, Yanagiba Toshiro brought life to Dr. Heli and the behind the scenes true to life drama in the ER. | 2. | Comments by aiscess [Rating: 8/10] A typical medical / human drama. The main plot is about 4 trainees being trained to become flight doctors. The subplots consists of their patients conditions/stories, colleaguesf life and their pasts and of course the traineesf lives and dreams. I gues the only difference compared to other medical dramas is the gDoctor Heli Systemh. They use Doctor Heli to immediately transport doctors to those in need of medical help and they mostly deal with accidents on a large scale such as in factories, chemical plants, highways etcc And of the 4 trainees, I chose Hiyama because although shefs not as good as Aizawa, she was able to do difficult medical procedures on her own unlike Shiraishi. | 3. | Comments by Jackykero [Rating: 7/10] I agree with most of what's been said above.

Don't miss the Special, which closes the season much better than the last and eleventh episode. | 4. | Comments by rikastar [Rating: 8/10] I'm a huge ER fan so I always enjoy most dramas like this... the helicopter rides and accident scenes give me an adrenalin rush (!!). Overall, the drama was good and enjoyable, but the characters themselves were sort of a letdown. These doctors are supposed to have gained some experience in other ERs but with the exception of Aizawa, they behave like interns straight out of med school. At least Hiyama's feistiness and makezugirai spirit give her some edge. Shiraishi is too goody, meek and weak to make a good doctor and Gakki's cutesy voice and annoying fringe doesn't help her case. | 5. | Comments by NaomiMaeda [Rating: 10/10] Code Blue helped me a lot. I couldn't choose what kind of profession I should choose and after watching this I decided to be a doctor (hope I'm smart enough^^). The most interesting thing for me was that all action was just in hospital or just in some accident places. All characters were awesome. I liked Hiyama and Saejima the most. Aizawa was too "cool", Fujikawa was too stupid and Shiraishi... well, I liked her but she was too weak I think. Anyway, all operations and accidents were realistic and it just makes this drama one of the bests. | 6. | Comments by Spider [Rating: 8/10] I think western medical and crime drama's are done so well in the U.S. (ER, Gray's Anatomy, CSI etc.) , so I tend to stay away from Japanese medical and/or police type JDoramas. Not sure why then I picked this one up as I try and watch JDoramas that typically are not covered like they are in the west
I was surprised I enjoyed this one as much as |I did despite the unbelievablility of the young doctors here who are all pretty good looking. Still it was good and had it's touching moments. Fans of the stars in this series will like it! | 7. | Comments by Sun_Shang_Xiang [Rating: 6/10] What I learned from this is that if I ever get stuck in a Japanese hospital and junior doctors are put in charge of me , I'm going to insist on the best looking and beautiful doctors to look after me because obviously they're the most competent.Average drama, Toda Erika is wasted in this.Asari Yosuke, Higa Manami , Ryo and the older actors do better than the three beautiful main trainee doctors. It's a pity that Yamapi is reduced to playing a stoic robot like character, he can do better than the script allows. | 8. | Comments by marspeach [Rating: 8/10] I thought the first episode was HORRIBLE and way too cheesy but it got better and really enjoyable as it went on. Good performances by most, especially Toda Erika, the nerdy guy, and the flight nurse in addition to the "real adult" actors. Unfortunately, the two seemingly main stars of the show, Yamapi and Gakki, were horrible. Pi was so wooden and boring and Gakki was a crying baby who looked waaay too young for the part, with a horrible hairstyle to boot. | 9. | Comments by outlaws0025 [Rating: 7/10] Pretty hard one to judge.. Took me a long time to really get into it - It's as if there's missing some background story or just some more info about each of the lead actors. Found it hard to connect with any of them at first, but about halfway through I began feeling for them and their relation to each other also became more definite. So from episode 5 or 6 I enjoyed it, but it can still only be a 7 out of 10 from me. | 10. | Comments by Swedish_Japan_Lover [Rating: 7/10] Pretty slow, good actors though
yamapi played a quiet sad serious person again, and its getting pretty tiring, since he cant play those roles. but the rest of the cast was very entertaining. the story was kind of blur, there wasn't really a beginning nor an end, it was just the same thing through the whole series and not too much development of the characters, i like doctordramas though, so not too bad. | 11. | Comments by nishishi [Rating: 3/10] Boring.. Had to push myself to watch all the episodes.... Code Blue has some good actors in it (but the dont interact at all). The plot.. well... what plot? Doctors taking care of patients and thats pretty much of it... NaH... imo even Kira Kira was WAAAAAAY better than this one. I mean.. even the main characters doesnt have a background. My suggestion? Go watch something else.... | 12. | Comments by chazarst [Rating: 7/10] I was expecting a lot more out of this drama, but it failed to deliver. I didn't like the lack of character development., and the overall plot was somewhat weak.
And I get the fact that Yamashita's character was supposed to be cold-hearted, but I think it was just his acting that was borderline flat...
Gave it a 7 instead of 6 for the great theme song by Mr. Children. | 13. | Comments by yeoni [Rating: 2/10] It was a drama with such an awesome sounding cast but a drama in which it seems none of the actors were interested in. Yamapi's stoic approach just made me yawn, his acting basically sucked. Gakki and Erika were okay, they didn't shine in these roles. The storyline was dull, lack of good character development, the music was lame and meh, a waste of time. | 14. | Comments by Tachii [Rating: 8/10] I really started this show because Tomohisa and Aragaki was in this. Unlike a bunch of medical dramas this first season actually focused mostly on medical procedures rather than character depth. Still I found a bunch of characters annoying.
The most memorable scene was probably Kousaku's relationship with his grandmother. Shed a few tears or so. | 15. | Comments by yurifly [Rating: 7/10] yamapi the hero saves the day once again. I generally love medical drama but I wasn't impressed at all by Yamapi's acting. Yamapi probably should stick to comedy bc his serious face is so wooden that I feel very little depth to his character. The drama has quite a range of supporting actor though and that's a plus. | 16. | Comments by dreamer10231 [Rating: 8/10] i like medical drama...the casting is okay...i began to like erika toda better because of this...however, i felt that there's not much character development in this story...or maybe because unlike others wherein each episodes usually focuses on one character, this series is quite a mix... | 17. | Comments by delaciel [Rating: 9/10] I know that it might not Pi's best performance, but I thing Pi has give his best, at lest his act as a doctor is convincing. I like the drama as a whole, but there's something lacking... Maybe because of the scene only taken when the doctors is in their duties.. I'd like to know more... | 18. | Comments by animefreak101 [Rating: 10/10] This drama made me fall in love with pi's hair. At first, I didn't really like it...but then after like the 2nd episode I just sort of got used to it. I love the music and the acting everyone did (especially Yamapi's) I can't believe I holded out from watching it for so long!!! | 19. | Comments by tachan [Rating: 8/10] Medical flight doctor interns who are all annoying at first, but I started to like them after awhile. You get to see them grow from unsure to more confident about their decisions. There are some cliffhangers and shocking moments on certain episodes that made me keep watching. | 20. | Comments by xerith [Rating: 5/10] Terrible. Characters were boring and without depth. Interactions were minimal. Plot was non-existent. Scenes were repetitive and not touching enough. Maybe I'm not cut out to watch medical dramas. Had to force myself to finish this thing. Surprised at the high TV ratings. | 21. | Comments by highandmighty_ryuude [Rating: 9/10] POSITIVE: I love this drama. Love all the cast. Love the story. It's even better than other Asian Medical Drama.
NEGATIVE: I WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT A TEN BUT,,But, it seems that for me 11 episodes is not enough. There's only a little about those doctor's background... | 22. | Comments by strawberrynkiwi [Rating: 7/10] bland. i'm a big yamapi fan, but the whole idea of this drama just isn't very good to start with. there was no msg to the drama. the plot was weak & characters were weak. i enjoy medical dramas a lot and this one didn't impress me at all. | 23. | Comments by v1olet [Rating: 7/10] There's something missing in this drama. I felt so depressed seeing a doctor like Aizawa -- he's not cool but "cold". Yanagiba was the real lead actor of this drama. What I love in this dorama was the theme song, Hanabi by Mr. Children. | 24. | Comments by dbesthair23 [Rating: 9/10] This is a really good show, Yui, yamapi and that other girl from Gal circle-forgot her name, but they will really move you into tears on some parts. Always a different scenario about the life in the ER, really good. | 25. | Comments by raynawashere [Rating: 9/10] this drama is so good. but really gross. i mean der. its a medical drama. so of course theres going to be blood and stuff. but still i was totally freaking out the whole time. lol. but i still loved it!!! :D | 26. | Comments by shinjitsu [Rating: 7/10] Thought it would be the usual 'story' based drama (as opposed to 'character') with oddly (young) actors. But ... was surprised how entertaining. A little on the sad side but nevertheless entertaining. | 27. | Comments by gaijinmark [Rating: 7/10] Yanagiba, Ryo, Toda, and Higa all good. Aragaki and Yamapi pretty bad. They could have replaced Yamapi's character with one of the skids on the helicopter and it wouldn't have made any difference. | 28. | Comments by hisashi [Rating: 7/10] Interesting story about 4 trainee doctor on board doctor heli to do medical rescue. Too many operation done out of operation room which i find a bit unrealistic. Nice soundtrack though. | 29. | Comments by shortmei [Rating: 7/10] Gripping in many episodes and touched my heart in many places. Good character development though I'd like to see more focus on delving into the supporting characters. Good nonetheless. | 30. | Comments by katsup [Rating: 8/10] Started out slow, got REALLY dramatic (almost too much), then ended sort of slow. It was really entertaining to watch overall though! Can't wait for the Special to come out in 09 now! |
