| 1. | I Want My Eight Hours Back [Rating: 4/10] I started watching this series because I was looking for a drama that wouldn't take itself too seriously -- something I can sit back and enjoy without thinking too much. This was a huge mistake.
The show started out great. I watched the first episode and it was exactly what I was looking for. A light comedy with actors/actresses I'm familiar with. I really enjoyed Shida Mirai's performance in Jyoou no Kyoushitsu. I think she has talent and a lot of potential. I think she did a good job here in portraying the role she was given. But assigning a physicist to do janitorial work is not the best way to go.
The show didn't get better with each episode. In fact, it didn't really go anywhere. To my left is a message that says not to post any spoiler info here, but it's pointless because there is nothing to spoil. Why? The show is exactly the same from beginning to end. Character development is non-existent; there are no characters to grow with. There is no message to be learned from. No moral. Conflict is present but doesn't serve any purpose other than comedic value.
The portrayal of modern women is changing in Japanese media, and this show is a definite departure from the male-dominated norm. I applaud the effort, but only with one hand. Instead of showing strong women, they characterize them with plenty of negative traits for the sake of comedy. For example, Makiko is portrayed as a selfish working woman that acts as a child, only putting in effort on things which give her immediate satisfaction. She acts like this non-stop. At first it was funny, but then it began to wear me down. Near the end I wanted to tear my eyes out. Yoko is a complete pushover and completely subservient to Makiko and pretty much anyone that comes in contact with her aside from her friends. She also is indecisive to the point that she never achieves anything of her own volition. Again, both of these characters are exactly the same throughout the show. No matter how horrible Makiko treats Yoko, she simply takes it to the point that her character is completely unrealistic, and her character becomes a plastic cog that turns the other plastic cogs in a machine designed to roll around in circles. In the end, Mirai's overacting was charming and appropriate, but she couldn't save her character or the show. The mother (in-law) was incredibly annoying, and the feud between her and Makiko (and Yamashita-san and Makiko) was so stressing I wanted to throw my own fecal matter at my computer screen. It wasn't funny at all. It was painful. This show is not a good example of portraying modern women. Ohitorisama (Winter 2009) is a much better example.
The only character that actually changes is Chika, but only slightly in that she reluctantly accepts Riku's feelings for Yoko and steps aside. It seems, though, that her feelings don't change -- she just represses them to use Yoko to keep Riku from leaving (which fails). In fact, the relationship between Yoko and Riku actually had an opportunity to go somewhere, but doesn't.
I know this show is meant to be watched once a week. I saw each episode over a period of a week, which may affect how I watch it. I think I'm a pretty relaxed watcher of Japanese dramas. I, more often than not, give the benefit of the doubt when watching them. I even went into this series with the lowest hopes possible. I did laugh a few times throughout the series, but the trade off was not worth it at all and I was deeply disappointed. Please give me back my eight hours of life. | Reviewed by chesed on 17 December 2009 | 2. | Hilarious [Rating: 9/10] Shida Mirai shows a certain comic mastery in SEIGI NO MIKATA. She's a young girl under the power of her beautiful, controlling older sister - whose unwillingness to compromise makes her a sister from hell. The plot is often inventive, but Mirai is laugh-out-loud funny one scene after the next. She's so amusing that it's clear the director made every effort to include her full repertoire of expressions. Mirai is best noted for dramatic roles in both films and dramas (including the acclaimed KABEI and the remake of HIMITSU), but that won't prepare you for her antics in SEIGI NO MIKATA.
Mirai is a middle-school student whose life is plagued by the presence of her beautiful older sister (Yamada Yu), who's beginning to have second thoughts about an impending marriage. The comedy plays between the manipulative older sister and the frazzled younger sister; before long, the whole family is turned topsy-turvy.
As a feather-light comedy, and almost a fantasy in some ways - or at least doesn't bear much relation to real-life. The series was adapted from a manga, and has an almost childlike innocence at times. But it's clear that, without Mirai, this drama wouldn't be half as effective. | Reviewed by jdoramadotcom on 31 March 2010 | 3. | Really funny [Rating: 9/10] The evil older sister who likes to make one evil thing every day, but somehow her evil act make things better for people around her.
Only her younger sister knows her true nature, so in order to become free from her sister slavery, the younger sister try really hard to make her sister marry the man of her dream.
I really really really like this dorama, makes me laugh in every episode.
well its good to watch Shida mirai again, her mimic is soooo funny, i really like her | Reviewed by chibichan on 22 September 2008 | 4. | Good comedy [Rating: 8/10] Lots of good things in this good comedy. The actors are good (excellent performance of Shida Mirai as usual), the storyline fast-paced and inventive, the characters entertaining.
You have to like Shida Mirai though to enjoy this dorama. She does most of the comedy, and you have to enjoy her exaggerated acting that makes the comic relief of this dorama. | Reviewed by Jackykero on 21 March 2009 | 5. | highly recommended! [Rating: 9/10] watch it over n over again, nv get bored watching it, very funny, 4 thumbs up 2 makiko, yoko n her parents, also naoki n his family performance, really hate times when yoko was w her bf, coz her bf cant act, so stiff, no chemistry at all, im nt blaming yoko, yoko is great bt e bf acting ruin everything! | Reviewed by henrywil on 9 February 2009 | 6. | A Lot of fun [Rating: 9/10] Don't expect to find any great meaningful truths in this comedy but it is great fun. Yamada Yu and Shida Mirai's varied facial expressions are priceless. Sano Shiro and Mukai Osamu provide effective supporting roles as the down trodden Father and Husband/Brother-in-law in this tale of siblings. | Reviewed by Sun_Shang_Xiang on 15 November 2010 | 7. | Extremely funny [Rating: 10/10] Extremely funny, I have watched this for many times. | 1. | Comments by Swedish_Japan_Lover [Rating: 9/10] Good drama! It was amusing and exciting. I was very impressed by Yamada Yu cause my previous experience of her acting has not really overwhelmed me, but this role fits her perfectly! Shinda Mirai was also very amusing, she has grown so much since the last time I saw her in a drama, both in her acting and in general, haha! At first I loved the relationship between Yoko and Riku, however I got very disappointed of how it all ended up...and made me also somehow confused, in one episode it ends with those two looking at each other...but NOTHING happened after that, not even a flashback in the episode afterwards...so awkward! I'm get irritated pretty ofte about these kinds of relationships where the main character is neither aware or even seem to care about the others feelings. I am however also somewhat confused about how it ended, how is it supposed to work? (That being said without any spoilers bursting out) It was amusing and easy to watch so I do recommend it even with my small complaints! | 2. | Comments by EstherM [Rating: 9/10] Not a 9 really, more an 8, but it gets a 9 from me for two reasons: I am very tired with the portrayal of women as being weak creatures in need of protection, especially in supposedly funny dramas. Here not so much, we have a mother that teaches her daughters to be straightforward, a beyond ambitious daughter and one that is - agreed - a pushover but also a little scheming and able to take her own decisions. All three played by wonderfully fitting actresses. Secondly, I am an older sister myself and I did recognize certain elements. I also always got the best spot on the table, was an important decision maker in picking family activities and my younger sister was always my avid follower and executed my evil plans, in short there were a lot of glol I know thish moments in it for me. Two little negative points: it can be repetitive and Makikofs love interest/husband is a bit bland, though Hongo Kanata is the sweetest thing. | 3. | Comments by aiscess [Rating: 9/10] This was definitely my favorite drama for summerf08. It was really entertaining and funny though at first I thought it would be the weakest of the seriesf Ifve watched for this summer. It was nice to see Shida Mirai do a comedy and act as a normal student, away from her image in 14sai no Haha. And as for Yamada Yufs character, I must admit that I was never fond of Makiko but I kinda started to laugh at her in episode 9 towards the end and besides I would not have enjoyed this series if it werenft for her torturing everyone especially Yoko. Others may be a little bit disappointed of its ending because it still favored Makiko but I was pretty much okay with it. So, I guess the only way for Yoko to escaped her sisterfs wrath is to get married herselfc or maybe not ;p | 4. | Comments by nishishi [Rating: 10/10] Silly story... But extremely funny! Couldn't stop laughing from the very first episode until the last one! If u r looking for a serious plot... a lot of twists in the story, and stuff like that well my suggestion is: stay away from Seigi no Mikata.. other than that i highly recommend it! BtW... im one of those Yamada Yu's haters.. and still couldnt help fallin' in love with this dorama. Shida~chan is such an amazing young talent... hope to see more of her in the future (but not in stupid doramas like Tantei Gakuen Q). Anyway... i loved this dorama... its so stupid that one cant help but laughing all the way to the end. | 5. | Comments by Inujun [Rating: 8/10] This was overall a very fun and entertaining drama about 2 sisters in which the younger always gets bullied by the older one. Yes, it may sound weird how this would keep up for 10 episodes but it does in fact get better and better, furthermore the chemistry between the sisters is just too amusing. Yamada Yu and Shida Mirai displayed wonderful comedic facial expressions. The pacing was quick enough too and leaves you with a rather fulfilling end.
In all, I won't say this drama is very memorable, however it would serve as a very good choice for light hearted comedy with a 'not your usual storyline' type of effect. | 6. | Comments by ABINTRA [Rating: 9/10] Excellent drama!! Very funny, in every episode, to the point of laughing out loud. I was always eager to watch the next episode and see how the plot advanced. The characters were unique and very likable, good acting especially by the two lead actresses, interesting fashion design, etc. etc. I don't really have anything bad to say. It wasn't exactly a masterpiece, but definitely entertaining and worth watching! | 7. | Comments by rikastar [Rating: 7/10] Shida Mirai's range of facial expressions is really fantastic. She does serious and comedy stuff equally well and is really one of the best of her generation. I felt Yamada Yu was really awkward and unnatural in the beginning. Personally I think her style >>>> her looks, I prefer as a model. *sorry* However, she did get much better as the series progressed. | 8. | Comments by Jackykero [Rating: 8/10] Lots of good things in this good comedy. It was a bit repetitive at times; the episodes followed the same formula most of the time. The relationship between Yoko and Makiko was hilarious. Makiko made me laugh a lot, but I don't know how anyone could seriously stand to be around her. | 11. | Comments by marspeach [Rating: 7/10] It was cute and had lots of funny moments but I found it really repetitive and frustrating. Makiko is a bossy beeyotch but somehow hides it from others. Yoko is a pushover and complains but still does everything sister wants. Over. And over. I liked Yoko's little romance with Hongo Kanata but they should have done more with it. | 12. | Comments by oonqy [Rating: 8/10] is pretty funnie drama.
Both yamada yuu and shida mirai acted well.. their facial expression are gd !
quite pity the younger sister though~ i like the last episode when shida mirai starts to sing "ponyo ponyo".. so cute.
the only thing i dun like is that the ending w Riku is uncertain.. | 13. | Comments by Anime Dad [Rating: 8/10] Hilarious! Shida Mirai shows why her star is on the rise with a very funny performance. Yamada Yu is perfectly cast as her evil big sister, and with seasoned pros like Tanaka Yoshiko and Sano Shiro in supporting roles, there's no way this was going to fail :) | 14. | Comments by outlaws0025 [Rating: 7/10] Pretty funny story, but I never really got that much into it. Found Makiko (Yamada Yu) very annoying in the beginning - got more likeable towards the end. Kumako (Shida Mirai) is a superb actor! The dorama almost deserves another point just because of her. | 15. | Comments by mammothb [Rating: 6/10] nice twist in the end, not much of a heartwarming drama about kinship, kind of forced in the end, but i really enjoyed watching shida mirai act!! she make all kinds of funny face, and her exaggerated expressions make the show funnier. :D | 16. | Comments by iheartp [Rating: 8/10] i was really debating on whether or not to watch this, since i reeeeeally don't like yamada. but mukai made me want to. and then i found that the girl was interesting AND shin from nana2 was in it. must watch!! this was pretty good!!! | 17. | Comments by v1olet [Rating: 8/10] No older sister as straightforward as makiko and nobody as lucky as her. I was amazed why people around her, especially Naoki, could stand her evil deed. Shida Mirai is good actress. Yamada Yu ... I wish I could slap her cheeks. | 18. | Comments by Mimori [Rating: 4/10] I was able to finish it only because of Yoko x Riku and even they weren't that great. I hated Makiko with the intensity of a thousand burning suns. I really felt like hitting her with a wet towel every time she appear. | 19. | Comments by Hinano [Rating: 5/10] I only watched it for the Yoko x Riku moments and that was executed very poorly. Makiko is such a bitch I'm amazed how anyone can take her shit for 10 episodes. Every week I wanted to punch her in the face. | 20. | Comments by Di@na [Rating: 8/10] Very funny comedy with a good cast! An evelish older sister who let her poor younger sister do all the work At the end you'll see that she actually loves her younger sister even if she never says so. | 21. | Comments by ؓގq [Rating: 8/10] Funny! Shida Mirai is so hilarious!! She's a very good actress! Hilarious plot, very light drama and slightly shallow at times. But I enjoyed it alot! Would of wished for more of an ending though | 22. | Comments by kyunspark [Rating: 8/10] Wuoh!!!
I wish I could do that to my little sister... ^^
I love Yoko character, poor her tho..
And Kanata Hongo is surprisingly different from his tenipuri days... So skinny... | 23. | Comments by liquidlzero [Rating: 10/10] i cant believe i giving this a 10 but this show was so original and funny...i have to admit the first episode almost put me to sleep but it just kept getting better and better | 24. | Comments by williu [Rating: 8/10] Extremely funny at times, and a clever storyline. Unfortunately the show runs out of gas after about 6 or 7 episodes, and the end just isn't hooking enough for a better score. | 25. | Comments by emina45 [Rating: 5/10] The plot is a little unrealistic for me, somehow. Some scenes were really dramatic, and a little too unbelievable. And the sister was too evil sometimes that it made me angry. | 26. | Comments by yeoni [Rating: 6/10] I liked it a lot, it was funny and one of those dramas where it's all quite silly. The acting was pretty good all in all. But the story was not very satisfying in the end. | 27. | Comments by Ezalor [Rating: 7/10] Starts good to get weak in the middle and getting better again towards the end. You can't stand watching the evil Makiko. Shida Mirai overacts a bit too much in this. | 28. | Comments by akitsu [Rating: 9/10] A hell of a drama! I liked it very much. The cast was hilarious and watched it trough without getting bored. Every single episode was really good. Thumbs up! | 29. | Comments by sable_starr [Rating: 4/10] I hated both the sisters. There was no character development and the only good part of the drama was Yoko/Riku but the writers screwed that up as well. | 30. | Comments by desert-raven [Rating: 9/10] This series was extrememly funny and a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to a sequel perhaps? Also, watching out for new dramas by these actresses. |
