Synopsis
A man is cooking a steak in an apartment kitchen. Although his skills are a bit rusty, his usage of spices and way of pouring brandy to light a fire is quite a sight. He's Shinsuke Kuwano, an architect. He starts taking bites of the steak when his cell phone rings. It's Eiji Murakami, Shinsuke's assistant at the office. He has called to remind Shinsuke of a party that he was supposed to attend.

"Mr. Kuwano, you were the one invited. Why aren't you here?" "Eiji, did you know that the ancient Romans partied by lying on the floor and feasting with their hands?" "You have to come. There's somebody that wants to build a house soon."

Later on at the party, Shinsuke finds Eiji hitting on a girl. "Did you know that five-story pagodas are actually one-story high?" This is a piece of trivia that Shinsuke had told him. Shinsuke stands out at the party with his handsome looks. When he learns that a girl at the party is interested in him, for some reason, he starts talking endlessly about architecture, eventually boring the girl. Eiji says, "Mr. Kuwano, if you don't do something about your personality, you'll never be able to get married." "I like being alone!" replies Shinsuke.

In the meantime, at a Japanese restaurant, Natsumi Hayasaka is reluctantly having dinner with an arranged date. When Natsumi feels that the topic of conversation is heading towards marriage, she finally speaks up.

At a later date, Maya Sawasaki, who works in the housing industry is giving a tour of a house Shinsuke designed. Maya is confident of landing a deal with a customer, but Shinsuke just can't keep his mouth shut, ruining the deal. Although Maya and Eiji are fed up with Shinsuke's personality, they still respect his way of designing homes focusing on the kitchen—the place in the house where family warmth is built upon.

1. Subtlety Done Right [Rating: 8/10]
Although I'm very interested in Japanese culture, I've always had a hard time agreeing with how marriage is dealt with in Japan. It's not that I think it's wrong. I think the problem lies in my lack of knowledge in Japanese culture. Sure, the trend is quickly changing with the youth in Japan (or so I hear), but the social cohesion that is so tightly woven in Japan won't disappear so much as integrate, a practice the Japanese are well known for.

So when I started watching Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, I assumed that it was just another drama about a man who will go though trials and change his ways in the end. In some ways I was right. However, the wry humor, simple situations and quirky characterizations made for an incredibly effective story-telling combination. It was just about a man who couldn't get married. It didn't try to be more, and because of this the show was fun and enjoyable to watch.

I've seen Abe Hiroshi in Hero and Dekichatta Kekkon; both were not main roles (I have yet to start on Trick but I'm getting there). Kekkon Dekinai Otoko is the first show I've seen that really utilized his talents. One word describes the key to his success as Kuwano Shinsuke: subtle. He doesn't rely on wacky, over the top action, or even what would seem normal, everyday behavior. His simplistic but well-executed gestures allowed the portrayal of his character to come into its own. It seemed masterful in a way. Natsukawa Yui was one of the more powerful additions to the cast as Hayasaka-sensei. Her emotionally charged, honest reactions complemented the subtly and cynicism of Kuwano-san perfectly. The rest of the cast were decent but nothing noteworthy to speak of. That sounds somewhat negative, but I will say that no cast member made a negative impact on the show. This is actually quite rare (for me, anyway).

The writing was decent. All of the situations in the show were built from the "blocks" created from the first episode. On one hand, this made each coming epsiode familar and inviting; on the other hand, seeing the same sets over and over made it feel somewhat constraining, much like watching old situational Friday night comedy shows like Family Matters and Step By Step. Each episode in Kekkon Dekinai Otoko has its own story to tell and each episode tells its story well. I really like how each episode opened with Kuwano-san revealing something new about himself. The episode opening where he works on the Titanic was hilarious. Regardless of the recycled building blocks, the show manages to remain fresh and quirky thanks to excellent acting.

The music in the show is unfortunately forgettable. While the intro performed by Every Little Thing will always remind me of the show, there were no pieces that stuck in my head, despite the fact that, like the majority of doramas, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko uses the same pieces many times over. Shows like Orange Days and Jyoou no Kyoushitsu have distinct scores that are very memorable, so I know it's possible. The music here felt more like an afterthought -- it works, but that's it.

So, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko is very enjoyable. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but the former far outweighs the latter and thanks to the strong acting from the two most prominent roles in the show, there wasn't a single episode I didn't like. Anybody who loves simple, subtle but effective humor will no doubt enjoy this show.

2. Such a "feel good" drama! [Rating: 9/10]
Itfs rare when you come along a drama that is so grand, you just canft think up anything criticizec and if you do, these minor flaws donft matter or are forgivable because the overall drama is just so great. Ifve been fortunate enough to come across two in the last month | Kuitan, and this drama.

This drama was really light, with a lot of memorable moments. There was a subtle deepness that affects you after you have seen the entire drama. Itfs taken me a week to start this review because itfs taken me that long to fully admire the skill that went into making and portraying Abe Hiroshifs character, making and portraying Natsukawa Yuifs character, and developing all the side characters. Takashima Reiko blew me away in Matriarchal Family, and she continued to impress me in this drama. The same goes for Tsukamoto Takashi, of whom I was exposed to in Tiger & Dragon, where he played one of my favourite characters in that drama. This was my first experience with Kuninaka Ryoko and I was completely charmed. With such amazing sub-actors, itfs no surprise that Abe and Natsukawa performed brilliantly. I keep hearing rave reviews about Abefs acting and how convincingly he played his role. And he did. To perfection. But I think Natsukawa played her role equally as well. I loved her facial expressions and how she communicated just what she was thinking through her eyes and the slightest turn of her mouth. She was the perfect pick to play opposite Abe and I believe the two accented each other beautifully.

Over all, this was a real gfeel goodh drama that left me happy and content when it was done.

3. Quirkiness personified [Rating: 8/10]
This is one the those character-driven shows that wouldn't have been half as good if it weren't for the actors. The drama's premise is pretty simple - the life of an eccentric 40-year-old man who willingly refuses to commit himself in human relationships and his everyday interactions with the other characters who are perpetually at odds with him.

Initially, the drama established itself in a forced manner - I thought the humor even fell flat. But as the show went on, I came to appreciate the subtle and sometimes acerbic derision that were spewed all over the show, and by the 7th episode when the characters were given more dimensions, the show really picked up and my interest was piqued.

The show was rather repetitive, perhaps to portray Kuwano's mundane, repetitious life and I thought the finale was rushed, but there's some wonderful acting here that made this whole thing work. Abe Hiroshi was so awkward that he was good and I can only shower praises to Yui Natsukawa - she just blew everyone out of the water. And hats off to Ken the inu, he's awesome.

This is a nice little show, highly entertaining with an ambiguous yet self-explanatory ending, but leaves something much to be desired.

4. The Best and a must see JDorama! [Rating: 10/10]
Probably my favorite Jdorama of all time, as I never get bored of watching it again and again! Abe Hiroshi is superb in his role of a man who prefers being alone and never wants to get marry. Excellent character development, as Abe Hiroshi's character portrays himself as an uncaring, self absorbed, know it all selfish man. But deep down inside he has a heart of gold and will do almost anything for his friends and family. He kind of reminded me of Jack Nickolson's character in the movie "As Good as it Gets". Just watch the movie and I think you'll see what I mean. The music is even somewhat similar. His character develops over time and slowly realizes that humans need each other and are not meant to be alone. This is a wonderful dorama if you like adult themed, well acted romantic comedies. This drama is truly special and a must see for Abe Hiroshi fans, and a must see for JDorama fans in general. 5 Stars!!! I hope they do a SP so we find out a little bit more about what happens next....

5. A wonderfully simple drama [Rating: 8/10]
This drama is about Kuwano, a self-centered, eccentric architect who has borderline OCD and lack of people skills. His frequent encounters with his next door neighbor, a female doctor, and co-workers help pave way to make him more sensitive to the people around him and become more "human."

I really enjoyed that this drama was more laid-back than other comedies. It wasn't flashy, it wasn't trying too hard, it was simply just a drama depicting someone's life and the scatters of humor that came with it. There little moments that almost seemed "Groundhog Day" like (the bar scenes with a rival architect, his konbini and video store trips; his growing affection for Ken, the neighbor's dog), yet it made me laugh.

The drama didn't end with a spectacular moment of Kuwano finally finding the woman of his dreams and having a "just married" scene, but followed the suit of the rest of the drama--a sweet, yet awkward subtle moment. Perfect ending to a wonderfully simple drama.

6. Abe Hiroshi...superb! [Rating: 10/10]
Abe Hiroshi's portrayal of Kuwano is brilliant; one of the best you'll see in any type of drama - western or from asia. It is the subtle qualities that he combines in his character that really make you egg for this guy - his slanting-over posture, anti-social skills (none at all!), his classic interactions with ken-chan, his mouth-twitcing, his attempts to smile early on (soo funny!), his glass of milk everynight with his classical music - the list goes on and its just hilarious! Of course some of the credit must go to director and screenwriter in particular to keep the story alive and well for 11 episodes - its never boring and the material is always fresh. But you should watch this for Hiroshi, it'll open you up to the OTHER side of japanese society!

watch it if u want to relax and laugh..
abe hiroshi play his role perfectly, he showed his self-enjoyment, self-dependent, ecsentric, silly act and otakuness perfectly which on the oher side seems pathetic for the others.
eventhought he always say a strict word, i just can't hate or annoyed by him.
provide with strong casts, no overacting, all seems so natural yet the story is to be kept simple but fresh every time and doesn't have boring moment even thought it seems to be repetitive.
Credit to the scripwriter for giving such brilliant idea, and credit to the director and casts for bringing such brilliant idea into an entertaining show.

8. Great Jdrama with memorable characters [Rating: 9/10]
This has got to be one of my Fav Jdramas of all time for it's subtle Humor and Abe's performance. He really reminds me of a combination of Fox's House and Jack N. From "As Good as it Gets" Dr. Hayase is also incredibly amusing when she gets angry. As a man I feel the whole self-enjoyment aspect is portrayed with such stunning satisfaction I almost feel like going to the supermarket to cook myself a steak just for fun. This is a nice fresh start from all the whiny characters like the guy from Densha Otoko which eventually just piss me off. Oh yeah, did I mention his neighbor is a hottie too ;)?

9. Terrific [Rating: 9/10]
Extremely well written, acted and directed. A bunch of quirky people who are somehow not annoying in the least. A storyline that seems to repeat itself more than advance in any tangible way from episode to episode, yet it remains fresh and even addictive. Abe's finest performance. The dorama as a whole is perfectly imperfect in a strange way, and the ending is fine as is, but selfishly thinking, I hope there's a sequel or at a least a special in the works. This kind of magical writing and cast/character chemistry surely has more to share with us.

I wouldn't usually pick this drama but I enjoyed it to the end! Don't be turned away by the seemingly slow pace because by the end of the first episode you should be drawn in. Abe Hiroshi did such an excellent job (an actual likable version of House!) I also loved the two female characters Natsumi and Michiru (she's real cute!), not to mention KEN-CHAN<3!!! But then again I'm a dog lover so maybe I'm biased ^^ All in all it's funny and light, with a dash of romance - something I'd watch over again and again!

Abe Hiroshi and Natsukawa Yui play an awesome couple in this dorama - their comedic acting and humorous banter makes this dorama fully worth wathing. the rest of the cast was pretty decent although the characters themselves could've used a bit more development. the choice of music was rather interesting and it was great to hear some familiar classical pieces - a bit rare in doramas these days. in any case, i'd definitely recommend this for those looking for a light comedy or more of abe hiroshi.

Kuwano saaan sugoii. Dont listen to howtwosave, he wrote a bad review about this drama on the comment section, i almost stop watching because of his review. I'm glaaad i keep watching. It turns out to be one of my most favourite drama.
Kuwano Shinsuke is a man that don't want to get married (Not can not but do not want XD). Well it basically his personality, he's pretty eccentric but tallented. He's pretty similar to his character at Trick (Ueda Jiro). He's very independent, so he rarely relying himself to another people. Thats why he don't like socializing with his coworker or his neighbour. At one time, he's fainting because of stomach ache. Luckilly his neighbour (Michiru) notice it and bring him to the hospital. This is moment change his life. He met Hayasaka Sensei and coming to the hospital frequently (Usually to mock or trolling Hayasaka sensei). The story is pretty slow, but trust me, don't stop watching, it actually getting better after 2nd and 3rd episode. Even that Pug dog (Ken-chan) have a quite good acting skills. You can see he progress episode after episode (little spoiler: when he get well with kuwano-san, that dog expression kinda change). My favourite episode of course that last episode and the Fake Girlfriend episode. Also its very funny to watch Kuwano-san and Hayasaka-sensei having a fight, They have a pretty good chemistry. Sorry its kinda long, i just don't want that howtwosave review became number two in this comment section.
Theme Song: XC~[ [Every Little Thing] : 9 (Also the opening whistling song kinda cool)

This drama revolves around the life of a single male architect named Kuwano (40) who is renown for his ability to design houses that are suited well for his clients. Even though he is able to do that, he lacks major skills in social situations. Because of this and because of his fervent hatred of being in atmospheres where he has to interact with people, he has decided to live a life as a single man. One day at home he collapses from abdominal pains and his neighbor, Michiru-chan takes him to the hospital. At the hospital, he meets an almost 40 year old female doctor who trumps all of his sarcastic remarks. This drama is about how these two end up together even though they each are career driven and have different characteristics.

The main highlight of this drama was not plot for it mainly went back and forth between the doctor and Kuwano-san. But the main reason I watched was for Kuwano. Abe Hiroshi does a spectacular job playing a quirky and sarcastic man. He dislikes people and almost anything involved with them, however he somehow manages to make the most beauitful houses. Throughout the drama it's great and often very comedic when seeing how he interacts with different groups of people or when he's put into different situations. One of my favorite interactions was with him and the dog, Ken. The way the cameraman was able to capture the dog's many adorable expressions are priceless. Overall, I enjoyed this drama very, very much and each episode had a lot to offer. This is definitely one of Abe Hiroshi's best performances.

i don't understand why pople like this drama. it's really boring, it's like the drama version of azumanga daioh? i don't know ... it's just really annoying with michiru and that actress that sorta looks like tomochika (basically every charater is annoying except for abe hiroshi).

I don't know why but everyone except for abe hiroshi's characcter are really annoying with people they casted. I don't think it's funny at all... it's just relaly slow and boring and i don't think there's a plot. i hate it when they do anything with dogs with like look it's a dog, ain't it cute. i'm like no... write some real dialogue or plot.

There's just no point watching this rdama, there's so much funnier/faster=paced dramas (american and japanese) than this. if you have free time then watch this pointless drama... that's how it feels like to me.

This is one great drama--great cast, plot, great writing. Many people have compared Kuwano-san to Monk, but I think he's closer to Jack Nicholson's character in As Good as it Gets (even the dog subplot). I love this show, but my only complaint is the slow pace. Like we all know there might be something bound to happen between Kuwano-san and Hayasaka-sensei, but it's already episode 10 and it's the first time we sense some jealousy on Hayasaka-sensei's part! 2 more episodes to go and not much has really happened. It's more like each episode is a chapter in a book about the life of an obsessive-compulsive-prone, unmarriable middle-aged man, and how he tries to justify his lifestyle. If this show ends without anything drastic happening, I might give this a 6 >_< But this drama is pretty funny, that it's still totally worth watching.

Abe Hiroshi's performance is simply excellent: at the same time funny, convincing and even moving, here and there. The same can be said about the absolutely gorgeous Natsukawa Yui. Kuninaka Ryoko is also good, though her character lacks depth....as a matter of fact, I don't give this a full 10/10 right 'cause I feel the whole thing could have been better developed. But anyway, it's still a very good dorama! 9/10 p.s. Kuwano-san has a great taste in music (it reminded me of Nodame Cantabile, LOL), as Hayasaka-sensei in manga (Tezuka, Golgo13, etc.)! Oh, and of course the Great Kaneda (that guy's just too funny, ROFL) has an impeccable taste in cars! 1970s Opel GT, one of my all-time faves! ^___^

Abe is absolutely one of my favorite actors! And he's clearly showing off his skills in this one as the perfectionist Kuwano-san! Its so incredibly interesting to watch when he cook his food and enjoying it, and thats pretty weird when you think about it, what is so interesting about an old man eating a fat piece of meat? the rest of the cast was very amusing too! Also fun watching Tsukamoto, since this was the first drama I saw him in since the movie BR! The thing that brings the mark down was Kuwanos family, where his sisters husband actually cheated on her and actually tried to make that funny, and failed. Also it could sometimes get a little lengthy, but still good!

The story really adicting with Kuwano(Abe Hiroshi) allways saying and doing weird things with his "i donLt want to get married" policy lolol.
I loved the episode with the fake girlfriend, my favorite one, i loved how everyone was shocked because Kuwano had a younger and hot girlfriend lolol.

Nov 2006: One of the best drama this year. Love the interections between Kuwano and Hayasaka sensei~ Their facial expression are priceless. Thanks to the great scripts, with lots of funny one-liner in metaphoric way. I like the subtleness of this drama, the face-twitching, the dogdeball catchball phrase (classic), and the dog is soo cute xD Kudos to the cast for delivering such a great performance. Pay attention to the details when you watch this, the japanese really put alot of effort in the setting and the props. There's never a dull moment.

A fantastic comedy with award winning performances from Abe Hiroshi (Best Actor) & Yui Natsukawa (Best Supporting Actress). This drama also won awards for Best Drama, Best Directing, and Best Script. The lavish praise heaped on this refreshing piece of entertainment is well deserved. A unique comedy about a man coming to terms with his own idiosyncratic behavior and his need for the love and companionship that are emotional requisites for a fulfilling life. Funny and engaging until the very end. Highly recommended.

One of the best I've seen so far. It is a really light and subtle kind of dorama. Everyone was excellent, not one character that I found to my dislike. One of my favorite things about this dorama was the music in it as well, it really suited the mood for his odd scenes. It also made me hungry watching this, everything he ate looked so delicious! This is the first "new" drama I've watched in awhile. It was so funny and clever right up until the very end! I have no complaints whatsover... although I secretly cheered on the pairing of Michiru-chan and Kuwano-san! This series really was perfectly acted and scripted. There was never too much comedy or too much drama, and everything had this certain awkwardness to it that it so much fun to watch. I hope they make a special! I'd love to see more of these characters. YAY!

Absolute perfection, easily one of the best TV shows of any sort, from any country I've ever seen. Abe Hiroshi is brilliant as the antisocial architect, and Natsukawa Yui is as equally as good as the doctor who softens him. The supporting cast are excellent also. It just so well written and played, and it's the sort of show where the characters are far more important than the plot. The whole thing is pure genius from start to end.

This is kind of a Japanese remake of the Oscar award winning movie "As good as it gets". Just like the movie, the drama grows on you once you get familiar with the characters, who are all portrayed by a terrific cast. It's not hilarious but indeed amusing. And I'm sure it's a drama that most guys can identify themselves with. For those in need of a break from teen-idol-dramas, this one's highly recommended. 9-

I loved watching Hiroshi Abe enjoying classical music and cooking so much, and his character was so dark and silent sometimes I just wanted to slap him :D The story goes on just by showing how this quirky and sarcastic man lives and interacts with their more 'ordinary' neighbours and pals (and the dog!! :D). Light comedy and really good simple dorama; I just felt satisfied when I ended watching it.

i just love how smart and quirky this drama is! lol. having followed jdoramas for the last 8-9years, this is the first time i've come across such a witty comedy from japan. abe hiroshi was amazing!!! watching his antics and the priceless facial reactions of natsukawa yui and the others were just a blast! really kept me hanging every week. nice job! hope this starts a new trend in jdrama comedies!

I wouldn't usually pick this kind of drama but I enjoyed it to the end! Abe Hiroshi did such an excellent job (an actual likable version of House!) Not to mention KEN-CHAN<3!!! But then again I'm a dog lover so maybe I'm biased ^^ All the characters fit in so well that although the pace of the drama was slow each episode was funny and light - very watchable and something I'd watch again!

Even the more rude and loner person has a bright personality hidden in the bottom of his heart. Another dorama about a person that don't want to marry, a typical issue used lately in these kind of TV shows, reflecting an aspect of the japanese society. Maybe it could look a boring plot, but with Hiroshi Abe with the leading role, I knew it would end up being quite funny and interesting.

I love the theme song "Suimii" by Every Little Thing ^_^ The plot is pretty creative, though I still got a bit sick of the reoccurring theme of the main character being inept in social skills after a while. Kuninaka Ryoko is pretty cute, and I like the lady who's the lead's coworker, she was great as the evil lady in Nyokei Kazoku and as a single working woman in this drama.

very good dorama. But I'm going to put a ten to a dorama wich is just a copy of Jack Nicholson's As Good as it Gets. If you forget this fact (wich I admit is not that easy) you have a great time watching it and Abe Hiroshi is at his best! Would like to see this kind of dorama more often and not just by copying an already existing movie! Shame on youuuuu!

There seems to be nothing particularly attractive about the story, really not much happened at all, but somehow it's quite enjoyable to watch. Both the leads were very good but would have liked to see clearer transformations of the characters throughout the story. Overall, a light, amusing series if not particularly memorable.

Many people have said it before: Abe Hiroshi is excellent in this wonderful little comedy. But it's not only his vehicle, all other main and side characters including Ken-chan the dog are nicely scripted. I will never forget the sight of Abe-san rubbing his long body under a table to clean every single corner of his place.

Brilliant! Hiroshi Abe does great in drama as an introverted perfection with OCD. The drama is light hearted, doesn't take itself too seriously, and the character development of Kuwano-san and all the people around him is paced really well. If you believe in love-hate relationships, you will enjoy this.

i can't decide whether this deserves an 8 or a 9. This was a really good drama. I fell in love with it while i was in japan and it was even better once i had subtitles. LoL, the main character is so awkward!! Abe Hiroshi did such an excellent job. I totally suggest this one! "Ah, Kaneda updated!" ^0^

My friend had told me this was all about subtle humor... and he was right. Most of the dialogues are nothing to LOL about. But it was still funny stuff. Abe Hiroshi excels as the "kekkon dekinai otoko". The bit of romance throughout was just the right amount for me without feeling too melodramatic.

One of the BEST dramas I've ever watched!!!!! Abe Hiroshi is AWESOME in this drama he did the best impression of a freak/eccentric (like his facial expressions and the way he WALKED--omg XD)... he cracked me up sooo much plus Kuninaka Ryoko was in this one too so this drama got more points from me

Most refreshing drama I've watched in years!! Genuinely funny, and addicting! there wasn't a dull moment. The character development is superb!!! You'll become very familiar with all the characters and it feels nice to see reoccurring side characters each day (such as the convenient store clerk)

Abe Hiroshi is at his best when he plays a male freak, and he plays it well in Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. The fact that he plays his actual age and that he has never married (as far as I know) makes me imagine that he is playing himself and not a character... and this makes me laugh all the more...

Best drama I've seen since Densha Otoko. Loved the fights between Kuwano-san and Hayasaka sensei, thought ken-chan was great, and kudos to a great cast and storyline. I loved the subtle subplots like the convenience store girl and the video store guy. Thoroughly enjoyable drama! Highly recommended.

A very subtle comedy, unlike the usual "hyper-comedy" we're used to. Wonderful work done by actors and scriptwriters. Unforgettable characters. Unfolding an interesting character rather than attracting the audience with some twists of the plot. Definitely the best dorama of the season for me.

Its been so long.. haha.. The reason y I luv japanese drama so much came back to me when I watched it. Its so realistic tt its damn funny. Loved the interaction the main characters have, the things kuwano san does n say can really make u dunno to luff or cry. Abe Hiroshi at his best!

This was the second time while I've made the mistake of having watched "man way of thinking" shows like "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (Larry David) with my wife ....and .... what can I say.... Abe is more cynic than Larry was :).
Definitively worth watching.

My first jdorama. And what a fantastic experience it was. Abe in perfect role. Since then had watched most of his recent works, but kept coming back to this. In fact, watched KDO 3 times already.... a TV special or part II coming?

Very few dramas make me want for more like this series. Abe's acting is very good. Supporting actors and actresses work very well together too. and there's none of those overrated annoying bishounen in here.

Nice drama. One of the better ones ive seen. Love Ken. The acting was great too. Somehow the show reminds me that its real sad to be lonely. Spouse or friends, they are important in our lives.

Worth to watch. Perfectionist, cynic, and weird otoko fell in love at last. Best dorama, best actor & actress, best Ken-chan. I love the ending.

Though the main character is awkward that is part of his charm. it was well made and the characters are endearing. pretty funny too!
