Goro Zaizen and Shuji Satomi are assistant professors at Naniwa University Hospital. Goro is a brilliant surgeon who will do anything to make his way up the corporate ladder. On the other hand, Shuji is a physician who earnestly devotes himself to medical research. Though the two doctors have contrasting personalities and are considered to be rivals, they highly recognize each other's skills.
The entire medical department is restless while preparing for the election to choose a new Surgical Department Professor. All Goro has on his mind, is how to win the election. Meanwhile, Shuji is looking after a patient who apparently has pancreatic cancer. He carries out tests on the patient cautiously, and is very careful in telling the patient of the cancer. However, Goro barges in on their conversation, and out of the blue, tells the patient he has cancer, and that he needs an operation right away. Shuji is furious at Goro's rude attitude, and yells, "Doctors are not God!" Goro ignores this, and starts laying the groundwork for the operation. But when Goro finds out that the Director of the Medical Department has already given a diagnosis of stomach cancer, he cancels the operation. He feels that pointing out his boss's misdiagnosis will only hurt him in the upcoming election. Shuji however, is determined to save the patient's life and go on with the operation. | Fuji TV |

| 1. | bitchy [Rating: 9/10] Is it similar to Iryu ~Team Medical Dragon~? The answer is no. I don't really know whether you should call this dorama a medical dorama. The hospital is just the setting. This dorama is daymn bitchy. Even the wives of the professors have this club thingi and they'd lick the other women's ass to become the leader of the club eventhough they're calling each other whores inside. Unlike Iryu that has the bachista as the problem that solidifies the plot, Shiroi Kyoto barely has any 'medical' problems. This dorama only talks about the dark affairs of the university hospital life. The only thing making it similar to Iryu is how the lead actor tries to crawl up to the professor throne just like how Dr.Kato did in Iryu. Talk about twists, this dorama has much much more twists than Iryu, but the character development isn't as strong as Iryu -not that it lacks acting skills or something, but you know the typical manga plot, they make strong chara developments- and it has sooo many great casts i can't even remember all the character's name. but I have to say, the soundtrack is a bit lame. But iryu in the other hand, was stained by Teppei's not so good acting, and, if you've read the manga version of team medical dragon, you'll find that the dorama's ending is a bit weird. To make it simple, IMO, Shiroi Kyoto is like Kurokawa no Techou in a hospital uniform wrapping.
Shiroi Kyoto is great though as a dorama, very good indeed. | Reviewed by monta on 2 January 2007 | 2. | Raising The Bar [Rating: 10/10] Shiroi Kyoto could have been split into two seasons, the first "season" of this drama would probably rank in my top 5 dramas while the second alone would have gotten a 9/10 rating from me. The first half of this show is a complex character drama with Zaizen Goro's struggle for power and recognition. The second half is a somewhat typical but still highly engrossing plot driven drama where a lot of the supporting cast become major players.
This drama could have failed in so many places but the execution was just impeccable, from the artistic direction, the brilliant classical pieces, to some very memorable performances, it's really hard for me to find anything to complain about. Karasawa Toshiaki has an amazing amount of charisma throughout the drama, there were times I wished I could be there to some how help him in his desperate struggle for success. The rest of the star-studded cast delivers as well, I canft think of any poor casting choices.
Shiroi Kyoto is also not your typical "epic" drama, the show does end up taking quite a few risks, the memorable ones for me include the trip to Auschwitz and the critical commentary on smoking near the end (especially in a place like Japan where smoking is still the norm, I was very impressed). This is one of those dramas that just put everything else to shame, highly recommended. | Reviewed by sucigam on 18 July 2007 | 3. | Outstanding! [Rating: 10/10] Without A doubt, one of the best dramas!! 2 passionate & talented doctors employed in same hospital, remained friends since school, admire one another yet each is ambitious in his own way with opposite views on life, enthics, career & work, walked two different paths.
Zaizen Goro's ambition builds on being the best to impress others, prove his worth, gain power & glory to climb the social ladder at any cost. Satomi Shuji's ambition builds on medical research breakthru, doing the right things, thou respected for his noble deeds but often shunned upon due to his low key approach & not going with the flow.
Eguchi Yosuke brings great warmth & sincerity to the character. Karasawa Toshiaki portrays this power-hungry role with a likable vulnerability that made you feel for his anguish. The relationship bwn the mistress & wife is rarely seen and refreshing!!
If you like typical & tear jerking love story, this is not for you, this drama showcases the good, the bad & the ugly and is the kind that makes you ponder, although centered in medical field, you'll find it mirrors our daily life & people surround us as well.

Watching ZenZai work his way up to the top by playing mind games and fighting with his superior was really enjoyable. At the same time, you are educated on some of the inner going ons of the hospital field, and realize that there is just as much politics and beauracracy as any other field. It's a power struggle and it's subtle, the way the Japanese would go about it.
But then the second part comes in, and supposedly the second part of the power struggle series continues, this time with Satomi. I didn't like his character to begin with and now in the second part, he becomes unbearable. His "I cannot tell a lie" goody two shoe personality is so outdated and so stiff that it practically ruins the whole show for me. The the daughter of the former head of the hospital goes against the whole hospital establishment herself, creating a conflict that rests solely on coincidences and fate (a theme way overdone in these dramas). This makes two unbearable characters and lessens the otherwise profound effect the drama has after the first eleven episodes.
Zaizen isn't even a bad guy, and his personality is way more in touch to reality than those other two goofballs I mentioned. | Reviewed by Hiro Toyo on 10 September 2007 | 5. | Excellent and highly absorbing... [Rating: 10/10] This is a brilliant drama. Start off slow for the first two episodes but then the story really picked up for the third episode onwards all the way to the end. Kept me glued to my TV indeed. The drama really shows you the "other side" of the medical profession.. the backstabbing, the bribes, everything.
The main plot focuses on the differences between 2 brilliant doctors in their own fields, Zaizen Goro and Satomi. Whereas Zaizen is completely ruthless and cold, he is nevertheless one of the best surgeons there is.. Satomi on the other hand is kind, unpresuming and would do anything to help the patients. Although they cannot see eye to eye, deep down they have real mutual respect for each other. Cheers to the 2 actors who brought so much feel and emotion to the characters.
Overall.. this drama triggered a lot of thoughts in me about the competitiveness in the workplace, ethics, friendship, over-confidence and the true meaning of justice. The song "Amazing Grace" fits this show really well as well IMO.
A highly absorbing drama!~~ | Reviewed by DragonSpirit164 on 1 August 2004 | 6. | Best medical drama! [Rating: 10/10] Great, great medical drama! Great plot, great acting, enough twist, not overdoing the dramatic and emotional part at all, just... enough. The interaction between doctors and patients was really touching, the hunger for power convincing but also leaves room for you to feel sorry/sympathize with the character. Not much romance in this one, but since I'm not a fan of such topic, it didn't bother me at all. If you like serious drama, watch this one. I wouldn't categorize it in either the "dark" drama side (like Byakuyakou, 1 million stars falling) or the "happy" drama side (like Hana Yori Dango), it's just... realistic I guess. Overall it has a sad ending and a vague feeling as you're watching it, but everything in this drama was so raw, so undecorated that just leaves you feeling like you can really meet these people in real life! | Reviewed by HHND on 5 August 2009 | 7. | A human drama [Rating: 10/10] I can't believe how amazing this drama is. At first, I found the story so slow-paced but as it continued, it got better and better. Karasawa and Eguchi's acting were just perfect! Just what I expected from theater actors!
The plot line and the theme were effective and touching. It understands how complicated human relationships are and why people are driven to act the way they do. The Zaizen character is the most interesting one. In the end, the story got me empathizing with him. And as for Satomi's character, it is a hopeful but poignant reminder of how few people can stand up for their ideals. But this drama does not condemn those people who can't b/c it gives good reasons too on why it isn't easy to maintain such ideals. Our drive for self-preservation, which is a very human characteristic, keeps us from our ideals. | Reviewed by moeru_h on 16 August 2008 | 8. | Deep, Thought-Provoking Series [Rating: 10/10] Without a doubt, this series ranks as my favorite drama of all time. A sophisticated plot, supported by engaging storytelling techniques and a strong performance from the cast, Shiroi Kyoto catapults in front of all other series in terms of both rating and entertainment value. Shiroi Kyoto offers an acute view of the politics within the medical profession, and subsequently the moral/ethical dilemmas involved in a medical lawsuit.
Interestingly, there is no clear-cut right or wrong in this series, and most characters walk in a gray-zone as to position the viewers in the judge's seat, or perhaps more appropriately, the characters themselves. While the ending is somewhat predictable due to foreshadowing, it executes the subtleties perfectly and provides a satisfying resolution along with some food for thought. | Reviewed by greybear on 25 April 2004 | 9. | well... | 1. | Comments by ml_desu [Rating: 10/10] wow, karasawa toshiaki surprisingly good in his role !
hope it stays that way. simply great at epi 4. the entire cast is superb right down to the son of the patient who dies, where on seeing his mother's grief, changes from an uncaring and seemingly irresponsible cad to his mother's pillar of support. at epi 9 the nail biting professor election results are out. as this is a 21-episoder, almost twice as long as the usual drama, epi 9 marks a turning point of sorts. does it remain as good? the first 9 episodes alone are worth their weight in drama gold. this drama shows what good dramas are capable of delivering at their best. what a range of superb performances! definitely not your conventional japanese drama serving up idealistic notions of goodness begets goodness. here even the good guys have their shortcomings. satomi sensei for eg. who for all the world is a great doctor with his patients' interests always first and who steers clear of the office politics, is a neglectful and absentee husband and father, even if he loves his family very much. azuma saeko, devoted and filial daughter, with high ideals and expectations of the man she will fall in love with, falls hopelessly for satomi sensei, her friend's husband, and cannot stop herself from making a pass at him. epi 10: read a review last night which explained why the hymn amazing grace was used as the theme song. when the balance is evened at the end of the drama, man's capacity for greatness and for nastiness and evil stand side by side, for such is the human condition. under the "right" circumstances, each of us has the capacity to do great good or great evil (with perhaps some more than others). even the moralistic self-righteous prof azuma on his last work day says in response to his wife's request to put zaizen in his place, that he will shake zaizen's hand warmly for after all zaizen had been his student for 8 years. epi 13 or is it 14 now? amazing, not only did the production go all the way to europe to film, the drama incorporated history, world history in a japanese drama!, and the history of auzwitch and its atrocities no less. for me this is a huge first for japanese drama. wow!! and to have sasaki yohei die as zaizen walked the death tracks at auzwitch, the irony is rich. zaizen in his blind arrogance, utterly selfish and shockingly careless attitude in the treatment of sasaki yohei, how different is he from the butchers of auzwitch? but there may yet be redemption for zaizen ... in his few brief moments of self doubt and his reflection on the role of a doctor and his part in the death of sasaki yohei, there may yet be hope and an amazing grace which saves all. | 2. | Comments by nadrika [Rating: 9/10] Karasawa Toshiaki-san!!! Where have you been all these while? First time seeing him act. Thoroughly impressed. Zaizen is the guy you love to hate. But while watching this, you can't help but root for him, however flawed his character was. He is only human. The character seems to be written perfectly for him. Karasawa-san IS Zaizen.
Although it was two seasons long, the plot was actually simple and to the point. It wasn't draggy AT ALL in my opinion. Its about how life isn't just black and white but there are grey areas and also the inner workings of hospital life. Its about the power struggle, politics and of course human relationships. | 3. | Comments by yolande [Rating: 10/10] i haven't been so impressed for ages. and i must say, it definitely lived up to the name of a 45th anniversary drama. superb production and post production from the team, beautiful soundtrack, great acting from the reputable cast, and not to mention a great novel and screenplay to start out with. i personally think that the first part of the show is a lot better than the second half, but i must admit the the second part is much easier to swallow and quicker in pace. a very satisfying ending the whole show. in general, just simply magnificent. | 4. | Comments by moonchyld [Rating: 10/10] intense! shows the other side of the medical world.. but what I found most eye-opening is the part about how the situation is for families who decide to charge a case against their doctor/s..(how they suffer, how they are perceived and treated by others, and how much courage they must muster in order to do what they did..) meaningful and tearjerking, a wonderful break fr the usual love stories! ^O^ | 5. | Comments by xxhiroxx [Rating: 7/10] The first part is boring and slow. To be honest, it took me nearly half a year to finish the first part, having stopped for three month in the middle. It was painful and unbearable--and seemingly pointless. Though towards the second part, the story picks up its pace and more interesting developments are made. The ending is overall satisfactory despite the terrible start. | 6. | Comments by kinkitsuyo [Rating: 9/10] watched it over last weekend. Terrific script and cast. Always like Eguchi Yosuke's acting and his performance is not disappointing. Karasawa Toshiaki reminds me of his character in Love Complex but tt is more evil. I would have given it a 10 if the lead roles are together. I prefer shows in which lead actresses and actors are romantically linked.LOL | 7. | Comments by aoi_dolphine [Rating: 10/10] hhmmm.. Brought the chinese version of this drama because of Eguchi and Karasawa. I like both of them acting opposite each other in this drama. The inner characters in which they portrayed in were very good. Power stuggles between the professionals in their area of interest vs the conscience of the human being. Who will be the winner ultimately? | 8. | Comments by atheon [Rating: 8/10] May 2004: A drama with a superb cast, interesting plot about the political scenes in medical professions. A bit boring and draggy at times, but this drama bring out the truth about doctors and give us another prespective to think about this job. A very realistic drama, not suitable for everyone though. Thumbs up for both lead actors!! Well acted. | 9. | Comments by HHND [Rating: 10/10] Very good drama, one of my most favorite. It's a drama about politics in the hospital and deals way more with human relations rather than the medical aspect. There are so many interesting characters in this drama - interesting, real, human-like, complex, you name it, which make up for two slightly annoying (but not completely unreal) characters. | 10. | Comments by carie_akanishi [Rating: 9/10] Great show that is very sophisticatedly shot.Has an impressive cast ,all acted damn well,n Toshiaki Karasawa really made his mark with the show. The story is very realistic n direct, no extra drama, everything is just right!!Even though this is not actually the genre that I like thus no full marks, hee but thumbs up for its excellence.. | 11. | Comments by biggirl20 [Rating: 10/10] i wanted to gib 20/10 to tis drama but the rating onli have 10 though.. sob sob..

eguchi and karasawa acted well in! | 12. | Comments by jo [Rating: 6/10] Doctors, and more doctors, well maybe some cute nurses. Good and boring at times, it gets draggy in the end. Shot some scenes in Poland, but nothing special here. It tells us about politics in the world of medical profession, how some people would thrive and do anything to reach the top. Just too much for me. 6 is enough. | 13. | Comments by maguro666 [Rating: 6/10] not THAT bad.. the hospital university in the drama is too corrupted to feel realistic. Eguchi and Karasawa portrayals were superb, and the whole story is somewhat sad but interesting at the same time. Despite the unusual lenght for a Japanese dorama, it keeps you hooked till the last chapter. | 17. | Comments by hummer [Rating: 8/10] I think it's done well overall with a few tear-jerkers here and there... But there are some parts where I became a little wide-eyed as I stare at the screen blankly in mild boredom, waiting for more interesting dialog or action to come back. But I still thought it was fine... | 18. | Comments by Lady Zhuge [Rating: 9/10] Karasawa Toshiaki's performance as Zaizen Goro has made me a fan. 1. | flyingangel It's one of the best japanese tv series with perfect storyline and excellent cast crew.
Its high quality caused its high rates in Japan, many people think it's a much better series than "Pride", of course, "Pride" is just like an idol tv, but "The Great White Tower" is a very serious tv with tons of meanings and the cast just fight the acting with each other, really really exciting. But anyway,it's up to ur guys whose typical tv is like what.
But I really want to commend this to ur guys, don't miss it if you want to see a real life tv. | 2. | Angel2001 Excellent script, well developed from beginning to the very end.
