Toma Tetsuhiko (Takizawa Hideaki), a surgeon who studied in the US, takes up a position at a private hospital in the countryside of Kansai in the late 1980s – a time when organ transplants were still illegal. He takes on difficult surgeries and saves the lives of patients with impressive skills, driven by the conviction that the level of medical care given in the countryside should be on par with university hospitals. In order to save the lives of many patients, Toma also appeals for liver transplants which he learned in the US, and meets a like-minded doctor (Nakamura Toru) who is working on making liver transplants a reality. However, to protect themselves, hospitals will not carry out liver transplants which come with significant risks.
