1. | Comments by tetsukei [Rating: 7/10] A telemovie starring some of the biggest names in Japanese TV. Other than the hero Kimura Takuya, most of them roles with limited screentime, albeit important in the story.
A very traditional story, no frills. Except of the dramatisation of the main character in an attempt to dive into the life story of a particular ronin, the whole film came out down-to-earth and believeable.
The fighting scenes were authentic enough without too much gore. I liked the part where Horibe taught Oishi junior how to cut down the enemy without the blood splashing into and blinding one's eyes. Very practical knowledge.
A decent film with a rather interesting final scene. One of the morals of the story is that choosing survival over the samurai's so-called honour is not a shame, but courage as well.
In that sense, it is not a film on just senseless revenge (forgive me, samurai-advocates). Something I did not really understand, was the subtitles that claimed that only one in the 47 ronin have killed somebody. Really so?
(Watched English-subtitled recording from TV broadcast) |

The true meaning of being a samurai.. till death do they see that justice has been served to their deceased lord. Loyalty and faith in the highest form. Wondering if there's this attitude in the tech era of today?? Might have but not alot. |
3. | Comments by koalabear [Rating: 8/10] Admittedly I struggled a lot with this one as I had to decipher Chinese subtitles on a fairly low quality VCD but the acting is good and Kimura is surprisingly convincing (and cute!) in historical garb. Weird anachronistic use of a song at the end but what the hey...... |
4. | Comments by DragonSpirit164 [Rating: 6/10] A watchable drama with strong themes of honour, loyalty and friendship, life and death. I was a bit disappointed that Matsu Takako got only a few cameo appearances with Kimura, but everything was ok otherwise. |
5. | Comments by Hoshi [Rating: 8/10] The story is of course, based on the 47 ronins. The cast for this show includes all the big names... I must admit that I never watched Takuya in a period drama before this, but he's pretty good as a samurai!! |
6. | Comments by Smitster [Rating: 5/10] To be honest, I was a bit disappointed with this one. I can't really put my finger on it, but it just didn't feel like the actors hearts were properly into it. In my opinion, for Samurai, look elsewhere. |
7. | Comments by jdfan [Rating: 8/10] This is one of those story that shows the Japanese samuri culture of the old world. Honor is more important than life. Not a bad short series. I prefer all these actors in a modern setting. |
8. | Comments by Nermal [Rating: 7/10] Not the best adaptation of this story I have seen but still was worth the watch. It`s a nice 2 hours movie to watch if you like historic dramas and movies. The cast was nicely balanced! |
9. | Comments by Shindou [Rating: 7/10] Nicely done. Takuya, Takako and the rest of this all-star cast make this a memorable period dorama special. Acting was good, although maybe just a tad overdone, but worth watching. |

11. | Comments by atheon [Rating: 7/10] May 2005: Great cast, but most of them are in minor roles. Well historical drama........nothing much to talk about......but some of the male cast looked good in 'bald' ^^ |
12. | Comments by ongrina82 [Rating: 8/10] This drama is not bad...at first I thought Matsu is going to pair up with Takuya again but no...but the whole drama is still quite good. |
13. | Comments by Q-chan [Rating: 8/10] Kimura Takuya, Okada Junichi, Tsutsumi Shinichi, & Tsumabuki Satoshi in a taiga dorama? You've got to watch it! |
14. | Comments by williu [Rating: 10/10] Fantastic actors, great story and excellent directing. Truly a great piece of work with Kimura Takuya at his best! |
15. | Comments by Akiiness [Rating: 8/10] Not going to lie. Who can actually resist the cast for this short drama? :P |
