I personally didn't think Yamapi could pull off a heavy character like Mineji, but he did better than I expected. There are rooms for improvements, though esp with the crying scenes. And Koki also surprised me. I am used to his "stupid" characters and it was a nice change to see he can do a serious role. I thought the drama was good in its own exploration of how destructive war can be while also revisiting the idea of dying for honor. It was subtle and nicely done. |

YamaPi is not good for this kind of dorama, He was showing his body (that he trains in the gymnasium of Meiji daigaku... a friend saw him) and acted so poorly!! The kat-un guy is so ugly, a mix between a rat and a mouse. And more of all the historical aspect isn't enough developped contrary to shinsengumi.
But I manged to stay infront of the screen for 4 hours! I,m so great! yeah |

A short yet interesting drama showing the lives of two young boys` ancesstors fighting for Aizu back during the Bakumatsu, the end of the Shogun era.
Nothing of great interest yet again nothing that was a total waste. If you watch it, you will enjoy it however if you don`t watch it, you are not missing anything important.
Great cast of supporting actors |
4. | Comments by Yamapifans [Rating: 9/10] Very meaningful and touching drama. Sending message of cherishing life and nice demonstration of parent-son love. Picture is beautiful. Some nude and bloody scenes, but overall good. Actors are doing well, especially the senior actors, so excellent acting skills. Yamapi is soooooooo kawaii and kakkoi there. His acting isn't perfect but acceptable. Worth watching at least once. |
5. | Comments by ginger ale [Rating: 9/10] Young lives, brave hearts, samurai to the end. Loved the two part series, it's history incapsulated in 4 hours with Yamapi, Koki and Taipi as the teen samurai who put their youth and young lives on the line to uphold the Bushido code. Its a bittersweet drama , tragic yet happy, like eating sweet sour hard candy. A must watch for historical drama addicts like me. |
6. | Comments by cheery [Rating: 10/10] Definately a show that is worth watching. It is a show that teaches you the importance of things that have also been taken for granted. Byakkotai actually reflects an opposition of the samurai spirit whereby it takes more courage to continue living than commiting sucide. |
7. | Comments by strawberrynkiwi [Rating: 7/10] I really like war themes, so I enjoyed it even if I couldn't watch the whole thing as once. I cried, Yamapi is great, but I do admit he still needs to improve. The elderly actors/actresses are always great and Raise You Up is a nice touch. |
8. | Comments by PaperCaged [Rating: 7/10] It was a short series, but I enjoyed watching it and learning about the Byakkotai. Yamapi's stoic expressions came in handy, since he was a samurai going through such rough times. Tanaka Koki's role was also memorable. |
9. | Comments by kyunspark [Rating: 7/10] Don't really like this kind of drama, but it turns out quite interesting. I found it rather odd that a Japanese historical series that supposed to be very Japanese, got 'You Raised Me Up' as it ending theme.... ^^! |
10. | Comments by Lady Zhuge [Rating: 7/10] The first half is better than the second half, but overall I don't feel that it's a particularly outstanding adaptation. The story is sad, but slow. I felt bad checking my watch. Or maybe not. |
11. | Comments by NuOy [Rating: 5/10] umm.. I'm not YamaP's fan. And because I'm not Japanese so i don't understand this series. But all i understand is war not give anything good, war give blood and tear... |
12. | Comments by Oba-chan [Rating: 8/10] Great... This is a true story, sugoi...
When you see a war like that, it's always give me a goosebumps.
Soundtrack: You raise me up (Celtic Woman): 10 |

14. | Comments by aoi_dolphine [Rating: 7/10] I watched this drama because of Yamap and Koki. Just wonder how they will look like in samurai attire. It turns out not bad. |
15. | Comments by nike_girl [Rating: 10/10] Very spiritual. Rated drama i think because got lot commit suicide scenes. But its a good drama to know about samurai spirit. |
