Kazuyuki Yamamura works at a major advertising agency, and is the breadwinner of his family, which consists of himself, wife Miki, and daughter Rie. He purchases a house, and is proud of being at the pinnacle of his career.
Kazuyuki's neighbor, Yusuke Sugio, however, leads a completely different life. The breadwinner of his family is his wife Shoko, who runs her own company. Yusuke is a so-called "at-home dad," and because of this, Kazuyuki considers him miserable and helpless.
Suddenly one day, Kazuyuki is forced to quit his company. At the same time, his wife receives a call from her former employer saying he wants her to come back to work. Consequently, Kazuyuki has no other choice but to stay at home while Miki works. Kazuyuki reluctantly starts his new life as a household husband—the last thing he wanted to do.
Kazuyuki's new "career" starts out as a big failure, because he can't seem to do anything right. This consequently causes his pride as an elite businessman to go right down the drain. But thanks to his hard-working personality, he is determined to get the ball rolling—and soon after, finds himself enjoying life as an at-home dad. From this point on, Kazuyuki begins looking up to Yusuke as his mentor. | Fuji TV |

| 1. | A Change of Career for Jp Man [Rating: 9/10] Hmm....how do I comment about this dorama. A story starts with successful TV art director - Yamamura San (Abe Hiroshi) who was asked to transfer to a smaller commercial company by his supervisor. He and his family also just bought a house whereby his neighbour is a at home dad. At first, seeing a "At Home Dad" job, Yamamura felt that's a job for a man without no pride.
As story goes, the economic turns bad and Yamamura san has no choice but to leave. Eventually he is unemployed, nevertheless job offer just come in time for his wife. He became "At Home Dad" and need to hear desperate wife's gossip in Iwasaki San's cooking class while need to take care Rie - his own daughter. The most touching scene is that when Rie said that she didn't need a doll's house anymore for her birthday present, she just felt 'right' to be inside the doll's house during her birthday's celebration.
The plot of this dorama is not boring at all, each episode offers a different type of topic. Lesson learnt: It's better to see the smiles of your family rather than living separated. Life should be compromised - option between taking a better oppurtunity overseas or living separated are in your hand.
This dorama deserves a 9 for me, there are lot of family value that is depicted here and of course doing chores are not for ladies only. ;) | Reviewed by sevilla.aishiya on 15 July 2009 | 2. | Abe Hiroshi as the FATHER!!! [Rating: 10/10] This was a GREAT drama, Abe Hiroshi was such a great person to play this role, a clueless husband, learning how to be a perfect husband!!!
Nagai Masaru was also a good choice, another confused guy trying to hide a secret, but impress his girlfriend too...
One of Kawashima Naomi's perfect roles, sinister house-wife and a gossip queen bent on keeping things in order and her way...
This drama is great for the family, and the little kids were SO ADORABLE, especially the neighbor boy, SO CUTE!!! However, you wonder what the things he had to go through, would impact his life....aww Rie stands up for him, and their such bestfriends... | Reviewed by Kirari Ililah on 18 January 2005 | 3. | Great family Jdorama! [Rating: 9/10] This one was a pleasure to watch and it was one of the first JDorama that I watched where you feel a bit touched. Abe Hiroshi is again excellent as a dad that has to stay at home and take care of the household duties, as well as look after their daughter. At first it's seems like his life is pointness and he wants to get back to work, but slowly he realizes what's more important in life... and that's family! If you're looking for something light and likeable then this would be a great drama to watch! | Reviewed by Spider on 27 April 2010 | 4. | abe hiroshi ga kaji, hahaha! | 1. | Comments by nishishi [Rating: 6/10] Overall a "OK" dorama.... but imo the "main" plot is quite boring.. "At Home Dad" just show the every day life of a father doing the house errands....
Because of that many episodes doesnt have any relation with each other whatsoever..... Maybe they could have worked a lil bit more on the plot.
As for the casting.... NaH... Abe Hiroshi is quite annoying as a father. I mean.... not that Abe~san is a bad actor... but hes just not fit for this character.
Nways.... there r many better "family doramas" than "At Home Dad" (beinh HOTMAN the number 1!!!!) | 2. | Comments by Lucian Dureau [Rating: 9/10] One of the first dorama to treat about a cultural and social change like shufus (v) or house-husbands, in a society like the japanese which is so patriarchal, it's normal that all the husbands, that for one or another reason have to be in charge of the house and children, don't be so adapted to this new situation easely.
Here, Abe Hiroshi shows why he is one of the best actors, performing perfectly the family and social problems that a new Shufu like him will have to face up. Very educational drama | 3. | Comments by pash [Rating: 9/10] Very well done, light comedy with some deeper, even thought-provoking bits. Shinohara Ryoko is gorgeous, Abe Hiroshi's very good, but two other actors actually steal the show here: Miyasako Hiroyuki is just great, and Ando Sakura (the lil' Rie) is so good! (actually, to act that well at 6...man....it's even scary, seriously! There are quite a few grown-up actresses, with many doramas in their CV, who could still learn a trick or two - or more! - from this child!) | 4. | Comments by Susan [Rating: 9/10] Good, clean family fun! I've enjoyed Abe Hiroshi more in other dramas, but this is definitely one of his best. The relationship between Yamamura (Hiroshi) and Sugio (Miyasako) was the highlight of the series. They're such perfect foils to each other. What drew me in was the concept and how it was put into a great story. From episode one I couldn't help but be interested in Yamamura's trials and tribulations towards becoming an "At-Home Dad." Well worth the watch! | 5. | Comments by yume [Rating: 6/10] I know it speaks true for the reality that is housewives who are trying to break into the business world again, but it really overstressed some stereotypical ideas; for example, the idea that woman instinctually are good at laundry etc, and the longer you do them, the more feminine you become. That was kind of annoying. But Abe Hiroshi is pretty cute in an apron, and I like the lady from Osero, so I let it slide, hahaha... | 6. | Comments by Kirari Ililah [Rating: 9/10] Wonderful drama, the special was also very nice, but it still seems like it could open up to bigger things, like what becomes of the kids too...
Abe Hiroshi is perfect for this role, and teaches a life lesson that men are capable of doing house-work, and women should not be treated as if they belong within the confines of a house...
Also, the little kids in this drama, are SO CUTE!!! | 7. | Comments by icpmat [Rating: 7/10] It's interesting to see Abe Hiroshi as a house husband. This drama tackled some representative problems, and treated them with a comic twitch. It would have been more enjoyable if Kawashima wasn't in it. Her character was very similar to her roles in other dramas that i have seen: bossy, pretentious and made me want to punch her. | 8. | Comments by outlaws0025 [Rating: 9/10] damn i love this dorama so much! first of all i love the actors and the acting... Abe, Shinohara, Miyasako and Nakajima is such an awesome cast and makes a great team! But one thing i really noticed in this dorama is the kids and their acting!! Some of the best i've ever seen especially little Rie! Kawaii!! | 9. | Comments by aiscess [Rating: 9/10] A family drama about parents switching roles. Abe here was really a father-like figure. His neighbor was also funny especially when Abe keeps stressing at the beginning of the series that guys shouldn't be the one left at home doing the chores. The kids, Rie & Ryota were so cute. | 10. | Comments by atheon [Rating: 8/10] April 2007: I enjoyed watching this drama with my mom. It showed us the difficulties of being at stay at home dad/mom in various prespectives. Some of the episodes were really touching, taught us the importance of a family. Learned some tips on dealing the houseworks as well. | 11. | Comments by michiru3 [Rating: 8/10] Only up to ep.8. Abe Hiroshi's emotional range still needs work, but I liked the story. None of the actors got to an annoying point, which was good. The kids were so cute! I can understand the situation and it was nice how they're trying to work things out. | 12. | Comments by reli [Rating: 9/10] Funny and well written. The little girl gives a solid performance.
* Not really a spoiler. You'll see it when it comes.* At the scenes when the kid had a fever, her face is red, skin sweaty, and breath shallow. Great directions and make-up. | 13. | Comments by williu [Rating: 9/10] A highly entertaining drama, with the great Abe Hiroshi in the lead role. And for once the child actors are good too, which is refreshing. The story feels original enough and the pacing is good. Nothing breathtaking, but good nonetheless! | 14. | Comments by gaijinmark [Rating: 8/10] Probably more like 8.5. Nice, sweet, family drama. Everybody talks about Abe and he did a great job, but don't overlook Miyasako Hiroyuki and Nakajima Tomoko as the first "at home dad/working mom", and Ando Sakura as Rie is a peach. | 15. | Comments by Ezalor [Rating: 7/10] Starting off hilarious, it gets more and more focused on the social aspect and the character development, what makes it less entertaining in the end. There should have been more episodes with Abe Hiroshi producing disasters at home. | 16. | Comments by Jackykero [Rating: 5/10] It really sounded good. I really like the actors, the storyline sounded interesting, but I couldn't get into it. I could not find anything really exciting about this dorama. Too bad, since there was nothing really wrong about it... | 17. | Comments by natzumi [Rating: 8/10] A funny family drama about the man of the house loosing his job and taking on the roles of a housewife. Abe portrayed his role well and brings lots of laughter to the show. It's a really nice family drama. | 18. | Comments by hitomi #1 [Rating: 9/10] What more to say, an Abe drama with him doing such a fantastic piece of acting, though serious is very funny in some parts, also for fans of Ryoko, this comes with the highest of recommendations. | 19. | Comments by Orenjideisu [Rating: 7/10] First dropped it after watching the first episode. But then I continued watching and it kept me entertained somehow. I came to like the characters. Nothing special, but has its funny parts :). | 20. | Comments by Aunty Coco [Rating: 7/10] Great cast & great acting skills... Rie reminds me of Nanami from Hotman... Actually the whole show reminds me of Hotman... But the story is just ok for me.... | 21. | Comments by venuskarura [Rating: 7/10] Seen this 2years ago and have enjoyed most of the episodes but from what i remembered i think they could do much better with the storyline. | 22. | Comments by dreamer10231 [Rating: 9/10] Wonderful drama...this is the drama that husbands and fathers should watch lol...abe hiroshi does it again...i hope i can watch the sp | 23. | Comments by pinkokoro [Rating: 8/10] COMPLETE. Abe Hiroshi as always a good actor. The little kid in this drama did a good job. The whole story is also very interesting. | 24. | Comments by liquidlzero [Rating: 8/10] my first family drama...pretty good just wish there was a bit more romance to spice it up a bit..its okie more like a 7.8 though | 25. | Comments by marspeach [Rating: 7/10] Not too special of a show but a decent sitcom. Cute kids. Funny situations. Abe Hiroshi for some reason is so attractive to me. | 26. | Comments by Jellybean66 [Rating: 10/10] Abe Hiroshi is amazing. Is there no role he can't make awesome? So versatile...incredible actor AND he's pretty hot :D | 27. | Comments by ppx040481 [Rating: 10/10] recommended!!good cast, plot ok..about housewives switching roles with husbands=househusbands....ABE HIROSHI SAIGO!!! | 28. | Comments by IniQx [Rating: 9/10] very interesting storyline that tapped on the issue about the status of men & women in a family & society | 29. | Comments by lovejdorama [Rating: ?/10] Avail for trade! 8-VCD, Chinese Sub
